Stampede Style

Stampede Style
During stampede time I always remember to “keep it simple, simply, simple” – last year mother mother played the coke stage on july 15th… I was totally planning on going and then the whole.. broke my pelvis and had to go to the hospital thing happened instead.  It just kinda hit me that its been a year since then, so much has changed !
My love for these brands has stood the test of time, however!
An absolute summer essential is the little white dress, this free people one is beautiful and takes it up a notch with the colorful detailing at the waist, perfect for stampede! It pairs perfectly with accessories from Aldo (a brand I consistently love) for either a fun day at the grounds  or a night out on the town!
I don’t wear a lot of makeup (seriously, keep it simple) but I consider a few of products essential. My beauty go-to brand is Clinique, I love both the chubby stick lip balm and high impact lipstick.  (I have them both and sometimes double them as a blush!)  I also swear by the dramatically different moisturizing lotion and the high impact mascara.  Keep your eyes open for when they have free gift promos to stock up on purse sized staples, perfect for on the go! Plus you always get a cute makeup bag!
Which way would you wear it? Day or Night?

Floral is always perfect for summer, and this micro-print is very country/western without being over the top.  When I get dressed for Stampede its always more western inspired than flat-out “stampede”  I mean, everyone knows a plaid shirt, denim cut-offs and cowboy boots are a prerequisite, I try to put personal style into it while mixing in practicality. This crop top is light enough that the heat is slightly more bearable and shows just enough skin without being hoochie.  Honestly, I’m pretty sure the grounds are a teenage boy’s  idea of heaven with the number of girls showing off their “assets”

Anyways, onto more important things, I died over THIS Alice and Olivia leather skater skirt (and the price tag to go with it) so when I spotted this one at F21 and they didn’t have my size, I literally hunted it down in another store and found the last one!  So worth it.  Friday night, true to Stampede style, kicked off with massive rainstorms and flash-flooding in some parts of the city (leave us alone, weather gods!) this skirt will not soak up water (thanks, pleather!) so if I get caught in the rain at least I’ll dry off quickly!  I paired it with braided gold sandals because I plan to be doing a ton of walking and the asphalt gets so hot down there that I honestly consider cowboy boots to be completely unwearable.  ONE year my friends convinced me to bust out my boots (usually reserved for actual riding..) and get into the spirit on the grounds.  (They’re actually all dead now, I murdered them after I went crazy with hot. blistered feet.) Happy feet make for happy Stampeding, and I really don’t feel the need to prove my western merit by mashing my feet into a boiled pulp. So, sandals.

Its really weird trying to dress for 35 degree weather with a 99% chance of thundershowers.  Its usually so hot that the flash of rain is almost welcome, but not actually, cause I think it’s safe to say that Calgary has had enough rain for a while!

I am all about minimalism when I go out, I don’t wanna have to worry about carrying a bunch of stuff.. this cross-body bag adds the perfect pop of color and it keeps your hands free to play games and pet animals and drink beer.  This Matt and Nat beauty was the first thing I ever ordered from Karmaloop, which started my addiction, so it has a bit of a soft-spot in my heart. For one thing, its 100% recycled, and it has 3 zip compartments; one for your money and cards, one for makeup or what have you, and a little front pocket perfectly iPhone sized- which I am still using to take all my photos (boo, quality) while nit-picking over camera shopping.

Anyways, off to the grounds! I hope you all have a beautiful Saturday!

Aldo has a great selection of cowboy boots right now (actually their entire collection right now is amazing and on sale so check it!) to get you feet-first into western wear and Stampede ready!

Ten things you need to know (and accept) before you go Stampeding:

  1. Calgary weather is ridiculous.  It’s gonna be unbearably hot, and then there is a 99% chance it’s gonna start pouring rain at some point, as if you weren’t wet enough from all the sweat.  Cowboy boots are REALLY hot, and not particularly comfortable.. they are made for work after all.  If you insist on wearing them, have fun, but this cowgirl gets enough of the boots on the farm!  Its a common occurrence to see ladies meandering the streets in the early morning with boots over their shoulders.  I choose flats or sandals to keep my feet cool and comfortable.
  2. Drink prices are ridiculous.  You should definitely NOT sneak your own liquor into the grounds.
  3. Gate entrance get’s you into the grounds and midway, but the rodeo is extra.  Rather than pay to sit in the stands I take advantage of the free entertainment. Mostly the concerts at the Coke Stage, but there are music venues all throughout Stampede Park.
  4. The midway contains culinary delights beyond your wildest dreams.  Come prepared for a gut-busting combination of carnival food! My favourites include the mini doughnuts, cotton-candy, lemonade, candy apples, mozza sticks, chocolate dipped banana, and deep fried avocado.  I have never left the grounds without eating myself into a state of discomfort.  Click HERE for the full list of noms!
  5. Girls everywhere will be doing their best Daisy Duke impression.  There will be an excessive amount of plaid shirts, push-up bra’s and cut-offs.  Most of them look more like Jessica Simpson now…  this is a trend I tend to avoid.
  6. Guys (well, everyone) everywhere will be doing their best cowboy impression.  Don’t be fooled by the brand new wranglers or shiny cowboy boots;  you might find a few real cowboys in the mix, but mostly its boys playing dress-up.  95% of people will be wearing a cowboy hat, 90% of those people never wear it again.  The real cowboys there will be laughing at the city folks; the city folks will be having too good of a time to notice.
  7. Cabs will not be easy to come by and the C-Train is unofficially renamed “sweaty-death-tube-from-hell” but it runs all night and considering it was underwater ten days ago, we gotta give ’em some serious credit.  Plus it’s cheap!
  8. If you do not like crowds, you’re gonna have a bad time.  Accept that a ridiculous amount of people are in a relatively small space and don’t lose your friends (or your wallet)!  Entrance into beer gardens and event tents can mean long-lines, so just go with the flow and don’t cut in lines (or I’ll cut you.)
  9. You can find almost anything you have ever seen on an infomercial in the exhibition halls.  Its also really awesome for finding western clothing, jewelry, art, carvings and anything horse related.
  10. The best part about Stampede is how hands-on it is.  Make sure to check out all the animal exhibits and mini-exhibitions.  My favorite is the horse hall,  I make sure to pet each one of them equally so no one gets jealous.  You can see all sorts of different breeds, but my favourite is the halls full of draft horse teams, such gentle giants, I just love them.

Gold Accents

Gold Accents
I’ve been eyeing these sunnies ever since I saw the beautiful Amber rockin’ them on instagram- they are the perfect cat eye and I love the snakeskin texture.  Truthfully I will never buy designer sunglasses because I lose sunglasses on a bimonthly basis, but I like to look because they are always so pretty!  Speaking of looking – while running some errands I stopped in at Aldo where I tried on these heels above, which are perfect for summer! And they look so luxe, surrounded by pretty designer details you wouldn’t know how reasonably priced they are by just looking at them! I love the python and gold detailing on an otherwise perfect basic nude sandal.  There were another pair that I loved as well with a bit more bling, I might have to go back for them.  Which pair do you like better, classic or glam?

Yes, animal print again…  if you’re over it, too bad for you- it’s my forever love!  This T. Babaton blouse is one of my all time favourites, the fabric is just so beautiful, I love the light color and the drape of the silk.  I got my love of silk from my mum (she’s such a snob about it – polyester is her nemesis) but it really is the best fabric out there,  I’ve said it before, all the best things are made by nature, not man.  Silk is the strongest natural fiber, its hypoallergenic, and it’s also breathable and temperature regulating – meaning it will keep you cool in the heat and warm in the cold! In other words, its bomb-diggity and totally worth the cost, if you aren’t convinced click here.

I found these shorts on a recent excursion to my favourite consignment store, Trends,  in Kensington – it was a great day for thrifting because I found these ones and this gold sequined pair.  I absolutely love a good thrift store find, and these are no exception, combining two of my favourite things – leather and mint.  I paired them with these metallic Guess heels which I am still wearing constantly.  I’ve mentioned before that I  find Guess heels are always the most comfortable.

lace skirt + belt by G21 || sunglasses by ARDENE  ||  shoes + blouse by LeCHATEAU  || bag by CO-LAB

Hello from Denmark! The last few days have been crazy busy and exciting, first my brothers grad (he looked amazing in his kilt..  cant wait to get our family photos back- Cedric may have stolen the show in the most adorable fashion possible!) then we jetted off to Amsterdam before arriving in DK.

We shot these before grad, so thats the bow river and not anything more excitingly European, although its risen so much with the recent rains that its been the top news story (still not very exciting). I was still deciding what to wear the night before and this look was the runner up- I love this outfit, white lace and nude accessories are perfect for summer. We decided the hemline was slightly too scandalous for a high school grad.  A friend of mine and I always joke that the shorter the skirt the longer the legs look – we made a rule to break the “hemline longer than your fingers” rule.  Not for grad though.. little bro even made a point of telling me “it better be a long skirt!” (it wasn’t).

Black and white outfit with red heels

|| blazer, belt (similar), heels, clutch by LeCHATEAU  || leather shorts by JESSICA SIMPSON  ||

I mentioned before that I bought this blazer right before I lost a bunch of weight, then it was too big for me to wear and I was sad!  Never one to give up a great piece over something simple like size, I decided to cinch the waist in with this kimono inspired leather belt.  Okay, its actually pleather… but guess how much it cost me? 50 cents – YEAH BUDDY.

Bold stripes and shoulders on this blazer tend to make a girl look boxy, especially when wearing a couple sizes too large – an obi belt cinches the waist and breaks up the stripes, giving the illusion of a tiny midsection.  I love the natural texture of the (faux) leather paired with the bold graphic stripes – leather shorts and an over-sized patent envelope clutch play it up even more. Black and white continues to be one of my favourite trends for spring, maybe its my inner Canadian but I love punching up this trend with a pop of red – these suede platform pumps are perfect.  My little brother gave me these shades after I complained and complained about how the nose piece of my aviators gets tangled in my hair, causing some serious white girl problems. He’s the best, I always steal his sunnies and he always lets me – I’ve never worn white sunglasses before but I like these ones, maybe because the arms are black, or maybe because they were free!

I mentioned before that I love jewelry with a story- I brought this panther bangle back from Punta Cana, then it broke!  Fortunately for me I have the most amazing grandfather- the man can fix anything, and he fixed my bangle for me with a little welding or soldering or something.  Every time I look at it I think of a beautiful trip and my sweet grandfather.  My Celtic knot ring is from Scotland, the turtle ring is from my uncle’s store in Kensington, the gold branch ring is from another local boutique, Purr.  I tend to fidget, so this way each twist of my ring takes me back to a memory with my family somewhere special.  Speaking of somewhere special, I leave for Denmark in just a few days- I am so excited you guys!  So much to do in the next couple days to prepare!

Tribal Print & Coral

city tribal style - printed leggings, wedge sandals, peach blouse and aviators

seeing double - aviators and coral
|| leggings via TRENDS  || S13 coral blouse, S13 braided leather belt, S12 wedges, F12 cashmere cardigan by Le Chateau  ||  aviators by ardenes  || cross-body bag by co-lab  ||

The other day one of my favourite bloggers, the gorgeous Signeroo, posted about how a stranger had commented on her dress as looking like “safari wear” – this is not a bad thing!  If you check out her post you can see what I mean – she looks lovely in a safari inspired dress, just her blog click link!

Can I just say that I am having a total moment with coral?  It looks so nice on tan skin, I feel so summery in this color! It also looks AMAZING on fair skinned girls, if my roomie wasn’t so shy I’d prove it – we have the same blouse.  Apparently it was featured on city line, which I didn’t know until I looked it up to link for you girls! Here I wear a size medium because I love a truly oversized blouse. Never be afraid to try the next size up when it comes to tops! This one is a great buy! Tribal and safari style are one of the biggest (and most beautiful) influences for summer.  Printed leggings were big on my must-have list for winter, and this gorgeous coral blouse transitions them perfectly for spring/summer!

I cinched the waist (to give the oversize blouse some shape) with a multi-colored braided belt and paired it with bold wedge sandals (check the outlets for them!), a neutral cross-body and coral (like, real coral) earrings a friend brought back from Mexico for me.  I have mentioned before how I love to have jewelry with a bit of a story behind it!

Sometimes I would never consider pairing certain colors together until I find an item with both in it – like coral and purple. Still, I am majorly in love with these leggings, I was a bit nervous about wearing them to work. ( I mean, tribal leggings to a law firm? Y/N?)  Turns out, my worries were totally unfounded, cause my boss and co-workers all loved the tights and the shoes! Yay.  Can I tell you guys a bit of a secret? I always wanted to work somewhere where you could dress nicely.. I mean, saving people is good and all, but scrubs? Yuck.  (Just kidding nurses, ilu!  … not dentists though, we’re still friends off.) Thanks for reading! everyone 🙂

mint & gold

mint blazer, gold sequin shorts, nude heels

blazer, blouse, heels by LeCHATEAU  ||  shorts – thrifted, similar here  ||  iPhone clutch, LA rings, skull ring, heart bangle, braided headband by ALDO

I have to make a confession, my infatuation with gold is relatively new… for years I was a strict silver jewelry girl, I also boycotted the color brown during this phase.  I decided for some reason that they were boring colors and should be reserved for old people.  Ahh, to be 15 again.  Thankfully I’m over it and now I am obsessed with gold jewelry, to the point where I am thinking about changing my medusa piercing to a gold gem, what do you think? I love how gold looks on tan skin, maybe in time for summer!

Last week we had a few days where it was like.. 18 whole degrees.. so I borrowed my BFFs blazer and busted out my new sequin shorts for a cute spring look. I love the color mint, but I always feel like it looks much better on blondes, generally I prefer bolder tones for myself.  That’s why its such a bonus to have a friend who’s clothes you can borrow!

To satisfy my gold-fever I just bought this gorgeous feather necklace from Silla, a local boutique in Kensington (they have a shop in Lethbridge as well) they have mostly jewelry and some cute hippie style clothing, its worth checking out for the beautiful displays alone! My brass branch ring is from a store down the street, Purr, and my turtle knuckle ring is from Manana Imports, which is a couple stores over.  Generally if I go shopping in Calgary I like to hit either Kensington or 17th Avenue, absolutely if you come visit those are the areas to see- cool shops, bars, restaurants and lots of interesting people.

The main reason that I love Kensington (and 17th) is all the consignment and vintage shops.  When I walked into Trends and laid eyes on these gold sequin shorts I actually squee’d with joy.  It was kinda embarrassing… then that doubled when I found a pair of mint leather shorts and double squee’d.  The thing is, I love shorts, and I love sparkles, and leather… so really I just couldn’t help but express my joy through a shrill squeal. Hope you ladies are even a fraction as excited to see this outfit as I was to wear it! Thanks for reading gorgeous girls!

More often than not, I can be found in some variation of this outfit.

I have to confess, I bought this top knowing full well it looks almost identical to a TNA one I already own.

Two differences- the TNA one, has a pocket AND this Quicksilver one is much longer- that was the real selling point.

Left - Quicksilver Right - TNA

TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

See I have mad love for all things striped and sweatery. Particularly in the grey/black/white family.  So obviously I couldn’t resist adding this gem to my shopping cart in order to qualify for free shipping.  I mean, its like getting the shirt for free, really. As much as I love my other one, its just too short for me to comfortably wear it with jeans, so I’m pretty happy with this one. There’s really nothing I love to wear more than a delicate knit, jeans and sneakers. Throw on a beanie, some bright sunnies and a few special accessories and you are good to go.   Also, say goodbye to my green sunnies, this post is the last you’ll see of them, I lost them over the weekend. (So tragic. This is why I buy super cheap sunnies all the time, I lose things constantly!)

Prepare to most likely see a lot of this bag- bite marks and all- I’m super into the nude and gold tones for spring and its ideally sized!  I accessorized with a cute little starfish charm bracelet and stacked rings from Aldo accessories.  Everytime I go in there I want something else, today I saw this nautical striped bag that would have been perfect for my outfit! Since I linked it and its not in the photos, I trust you can tell I managed to resist. Plus, mine is better anyways 😛

Onto the outfit.  When I get dressed, what I really want is to be comfortable.  This outfit has my two favourite comfy basics- a relaxed cotton tee and dark wash skinny jeans.  My office is pretty casual so I get to wear jeans every day, I usually dress them up with a blazer.  This linen blazer kinda reminds me of chambray, and since denim-on-denim is having such a moment, I figured I would show some pride and bust out the Canadian Tuxedo.. sort of… the blazer is a bit of a cheat not being actual denim.  I have a love/hate relationship with linen… the wrinkles… there are no words, but this blazer eliminates that by having ruched details already so wrinkles don’t matter, fabulous!  The fabric has quite noticeable stretch (which I love in a blazer) and it is very light and cool.  Linen is often exclusively a spring and summer fabric (certainly in stores), which is why I find myself busting this jacket out as soon as the snow melts! (This time, stay away you white fluffy devil!)

Blue has always been my favourite color, it can basically be treated like a neutral, many people don’t seem to realize how versatile it is!  I’ve mentioned before how a scarf can make a simple outfit stand out- that’s absolutely the case here!   I paired simple basics with a bold, red, anchor printed pashmina, I love the black and white stripe detailing on the edges of it, pointy toe kitten heels and ruby lips finish the look. With a few accessories denim basics become a sweet sailor inspired outfit.

Spring is finally here in Calgary! (No matter how it tries to get away- get out of here April snow we know you can’t hold on much longer!)  Cedric and I stepped out to enjoy the weather today, he had the best time running around the yard, did you notice him?!  I’m wearing few of my favourite trends for spring- a neutral relaxed top is my key wardrobe piece, I love the sheer back on this one, the light fabric and the cuffed sleeves- it just drapes perfectly for an easy, breezy cool look! Speaking of cool, I am determined to pave the way towards shorts, even though the weather really doesn’t merit it.

Mint and gold are two colors I have been obsessed with for ages- I made this DIY Glitter Clutch around this time last year and am still loving it!  Another spring trend I DIY’d? Neon + Nude ColorBlock Cap Toe Heels– super easy to make and a super cute spring trend to try! Both DIY’s are cheap, fast and easy- just how I like em!

I accessorized my outfit based around my spring inspiration DIY’s. I got this turquoise claw necklace while visiting one of my best girlfriends in Vancouver a few summers ago- she took me to this amazing little vintage shop and I have been dreaming of returning ever since! Whenever I wear it I remember summer fun with a beautiful friend! Subtle stacked gold bangles and mixed metal rings paired with colorful feather earrings add to the easy summer vibe. I’m dreaming of Coachella from Calgary I suppose!

Sugar Skulls & Neons

|| leather jacket, sugar skull pashmina, ring by LeCHATEAU  ||  beanie + sunnies by ARDENE  ||  cashmere cardigan, cotton tee by ZARA  || olive skinny jeans by BLUENOTES || iPhone clutch by ALDO  ||  over the knee boots by SPRING

Hey gorgeous girls! Embracing a couple of my favourite accessory trends today for spring. I got this sugar skull pashmina the other day and I completely love it, reminds me of the late, great Mr. McQueen ❤ paired with neon wayfarer’s and an -almost- neon beanie. I’m loving my hair more and more lately.. the lightening spray I’ve been using has totally worked wonders and its getting longer you guys!! I also gave in and bought myself this little Aldo iPhone wallet. You might remember I’ve been obsessed with this Michael Kors version, but I figured I would see if I liked the style of it before shelling out the big bucks. Still not totally decided- my phone ends up outside the case 90% of the time, but i love the little wallet and its beyond convenient for going out. Worth the $20 at least!

This leather jacket I’m wearing is my favourite (I even bought two and gave one to my cousin!) it was an unreal deal ($35 for genuine leather!?) and I love the fit and tailoring. Roll up the sleeves and layer a cashmere cardigan underneath for a warm and casual look. Layered over a basic white tee and olive skinnies to add a bit of color. I  borrowed my roomie’s boots, I love that we’re the same shoe size! These over the knee boots from Spring were on sale for $60, they are super comfortable and cute, but I do wish they were real leather!

I think I got my pashmina obsession from my mother, but honestly I can’t rave about them enough.  If you don’t wear them, get on it girl. Not only do they add a surprising amount of warmth but a statement scarf can instantly change the whole look of your outfit! Its an extremely easy way to add color or print to a basic outfit.

I hope you all have a lovely Easter long weekend. I’m looking forward to some much needed down time with my family and some serious hugs from my mom.

casual camoflage

camo print leggings and an oversized henley

A little bit inspired by St. Patrick’s Day, but more because it finally started to feel like spring is in the air! I paired two of the greatest prints and  the biggest trends coming up for spring -floral and camouflage.camo leggings and floral bralet, billabong henley, le chateau owl necklace, leather cuff and lace vest, aldo rings and bangles Lately I’ve been embracing my inner hippie with a feather earring worn in the my conch.  I cannot wait to have the long hippie hair to go with it! Over-sized sunglasses, an adorable little owl pendant, and a knock-off Hermes studded cuff, all available at le chateau. The rest of the accessories (other than the vintage wooden bangle) “love” thumb ring, open head-to-head skull ring, and gold studded stretch bangle are all available at aldo.

conch wooden feather earring, love ring, and hermes leather cuffI love camo print, mostly because I’m a big green fan, but it also just gives that casual cool touch to an outfit. I had a dope pair of camo shorts that I donated a little while back just because I had them for so long.. then naturally, camo starts appearing everywhere! I have been searching for the perfect fitting pair of camo skinny jeans that don’t break the bank. I fell in love with this current elliott pair, but not the $198 price tag.  So the search for the perfect camo pant continues, meanwhile I couldn’t resist these $7 leggings from Sirens to embrace the trend a little without busting the college student budget!casual camoflageFloral, an annual spring trend, has been my BFF forever- I’m a girly girl at heart when it comes to clothes! The bustier is also from Sirens, retailing at a whopping $12 – it adds just a touch of print and the tiny floral print is unobtrusive enough to mix with the bold camo print.head to toe details - floral bralet and camo leggings by sirens, rings by aldo, jewelery and vest by le chateau, henly by billabongOn top I wore this Billabong Henley  its one of my favourite shirts because its honestly as comfortable as pajamas and its such a pretty, subtle shade of green. I bought it in extra-large so that I could get away with wearing it with leggings. I love buying over-sized tops, although I have to admit, I toe the line a bit when it comes to the leggings-are-not-pants rule. To add some shape to the over-sized top, and visually elongate the look, I layered a black cotton and lace vest from le chateau over top. That baby cost me a total of $5 so I keep it even though I only wear it once in a blue moon.

The ankle boots are from le chateau as well, old season.  The day after I took these my roomie brought home the most beautiful over the knee boots that would have been perfect! when mixing prints remember the   MAJOR/minor  mix rule

A major print – something that can be seen at a distance, pairs best with a minor print- something that is only noticeably printed when viewed close up.
