Calgary floods

Its been difficult to get new photos lately due to the fact its been raining for weeks (I’ve been super busy too) I missed most of it while gallivanting in beautiful Denmark, but this last week has been rather damp. I don’t mind, I love the water, love the rain, but it can stop anytime now. If you haven’t heard Calgary is underwater- at least the neighborhoods close to either of the two rivers that run though the city. Normally I complain about how much I miss living in Mission, by the Elbow River, but I’m glad I live on a hill now! I went for a run tonight despite the rain (there’s a trail that overlooks the river) and saw the flooding for myself. Bowness and Montgomery, the area behind me in both shots, are flooded. The water has risen at least 10 feet I would say, its nearly touching the bottom of this bridge I’m standing on, the homes behind me are flooded, and the water is still rising. There is widespread flooding and residents are being evacuated in Calgary, Canmore and High River. I feel terrible for the thousands of people who are out of their homes, and the millions of dollar in damage. At this point though, I kinda wish the law firm I worked for was downtown so I could have the time off work! (I’m kidding, because it would actually be a giant pain and I like my job!)

Keep Calgary in your thoughts and let me know which outfit you prefer, click to to see the full posts, and leave your vote below for your favourite!\

These shorts are probably one of my most worn items in my closet,  I bought them a couple years ago by now, but I am still constantly going back to them again and again!  I just love anything that glitters, I cannot resist.  If there is one drawback about my gold sequin pair it’s that they don’t have pockets – I hate not having pockets!  Sometimes when I get dressed I just go for all my favourite things- in this case simple silver jewelry from the Dominican Republic, classic aviators and a patent leather statement clutch pair with polka dots perfectly to complement my sparkling shorts! Metallic heels finish the look for polished city style that’s classic and cool.

I am in love with this blouse, the style is my absolute favourite- when shopping for tunic blouses I often go up a size so they will drape nicer and fall just a little longer.  My other requirements for finding the perfect blouse is 3/4 length sleeves and half button-down – the contrasting black and white  and the polka-dot print had me sold.  I love a chiffon blouse and shorts for summer, its chic and cool!

lace skirt + belt by G21 || sunglasses by ARDENE  ||  shoes + blouse by LeCHATEAU  || bag by CO-LAB

Hello from Denmark! The last few days have been crazy busy and exciting, first my brothers grad (he looked amazing in his kilt..  cant wait to get our family photos back- Cedric may have stolen the show in the most adorable fashion possible!) then we jetted off to Amsterdam before arriving in DK.

We shot these before grad, so thats the bow river and not anything more excitingly European, although its risen so much with the recent rains that its been the top news story (still not very exciting). I was still deciding what to wear the night before and this look was the runner up- I love this outfit, white lace and nude accessories are perfect for summer. We decided the hemline was slightly too scandalous for a high school grad.  A friend of mine and I always joke that the shorter the skirt the longer the legs look – we made a rule to break the “hemline longer than your fingers” rule.  Not for grad though.. little bro even made a point of telling me “it better be a long skirt!” (it wasn’t).

flower power

floral skirt, bright bag for summer

||  skirt by TOPSHOP  ||  heels and blouse by LeCHATEAU ||  bag – thrifted  ||  aviators by ARDENES  ||

Apparently April showers bring May flowers… well all we got here in April was snow, not rain, and so May is feeling distinctly flowerless (although now its nearly over things are finally blooming) I threw on this jersey floral skirt to add a little floral to my life, in shades of blue and green of course, because I’ve been living in those tones lately.

I’ll tell you a secret, this skirt is really a tube top with an elastic bust – its such a perfect summer piece, as a top or as a bottom.  When it comes to clothes, as far as I’m concerned, there’s no rules for how to wear them.   A lightly draped “skirt” paired with a silk blouse and belted at the waist is a summer uniform for me.  Today, we finally have the rain we’ve been waiting for, so hopefully we’ll see some more flowers blooming soon!

Happy Humpday!

black//white

Black and white outfit with red heels

|| blazer, belt (similar), heels, clutch by LeCHATEAU  || leather shorts by JESSICA SIMPSON  ||

I mentioned before that I bought this blazer right before I lost a bunch of weight, then it was too big for me to wear and I was sad!  Never one to give up a great piece over something simple like size, I decided to cinch the waist in with this kimono inspired leather belt.  Okay, its actually pleather… but guess how much it cost me? 50 cents – YEAH BUDDY.

Bold stripes and shoulders on this blazer tend to make a girl look boxy, especially when wearing a couple sizes too large – an obi belt cinches the waist and breaks up the stripes, giving the illusion of a tiny midsection.  I love the natural texture of the (faux) leather paired with the bold graphic stripes – leather shorts and an over-sized patent envelope clutch play it up even more. Black and white continues to be one of my favourite trends for spring, maybe its my inner Canadian but I love punching up this trend with a pop of red – these suede platform pumps are perfect.  My little brother gave me these shades after I complained and complained about how the nose piece of my aviators gets tangled in my hair, causing some serious white girl problems. He’s the best, I always steal his sunnies and he always lets me – I’ve never worn white sunglasses before but I like these ones, maybe because the arms are black, or maybe because they were free!

I mentioned before that I love jewelry with a story- I brought this panther bangle back from Punta Cana, then it broke!  Fortunately for me I have the most amazing grandfather- the man can fix anything, and he fixed my bangle for me with a little welding or soldering or something.  Every time I look at it I think of a beautiful trip and my sweet grandfather.  My Celtic knot ring is from Scotland, the turtle ring is from my uncle’s store in Kensington, the gold branch ring is from another local boutique, Purr.  I tend to fidget, so this way each twist of my ring takes me back to a memory with my family somewhere special.  Speaking of somewhere special, I leave for Denmark in just a few days- I am so excited you guys!  So much to do in the next couple days to prepare!

Tribal Print & Coral

city tribal style - printed leggings, wedge sandals, peach blouse and aviators

seeing double - aviators and coral
|| leggings via TRENDS  || S13 coral blouse, S13 braided leather belt, S12 wedges, F12 cashmere cardigan by Le Chateau  ||  aviators by ardenes  || cross-body bag by co-lab  ||

The other day one of my favourite bloggers, the gorgeous Signeroo, posted about how a stranger had commented on her dress as looking like “safari wear” – this is not a bad thing!  If you check out her post you can see what I mean – she looks lovely in a safari inspired dress, just her blog click link!

Can I just say that I am having a total moment with coral?  It looks so nice on tan skin, I feel so summery in this color! It also looks AMAZING on fair skinned girls, if my roomie wasn’t so shy I’d prove it – we have the same blouse.  Apparently it was featured on city line, which I didn’t know until I looked it up to link for you girls! Here I wear a size medium because I love a truly oversized blouse. Never be afraid to try the next size up when it comes to tops! This one is a great buy! Tribal and safari style are one of the biggest (and most beautiful) influences for summer.  Printed leggings were big on my must-have list for winter, and this gorgeous coral blouse transitions them perfectly for spring/summer!

I cinched the waist (to give the oversize blouse some shape) with a multi-colored braided belt and paired it with bold wedge sandals (check the outlets for them!), a neutral cross-body and coral (like, real coral) earrings a friend brought back from Mexico for me.  I have mentioned before how I love to have jewelry with a bit of a story behind it!

Sometimes I would never consider pairing certain colors together until I find an item with both in it – like coral and purple. Still, I am majorly in love with these leggings, I was a bit nervous about wearing them to work. ( I mean, tribal leggings to a law firm? Y/N?)  Turns out, my worries were totally unfounded, cause my boss and co-workers all loved the tights and the shoes! Yay.  Can I tell you guys a bit of a secret? I always wanted to work somewhere where you could dress nicely.. I mean, saving people is good and all, but scrubs? Yuck.  (Just kidding nurses, ilu!  … not dentists though, we’re still friends off.) Thanks for reading! everyone 🙂

La Mer + Military

IMG_3736

faux-leather pants XXI FOREVER  ||  leather pumps LeCHATEAU  ||  nude cross-body bag CO-LAB  ||  military jacket ROTHCO via MissKL  ||  aviators ARDENE  || sage stone wrap watch LA MER COLLECTIONS ||

Today I’m super excited to show you the two latest objects of my desire that have been delivered to my door-step! This amazing military jacket and gorgeous La Mer charm wrap watch.  I ordered this jacket from Miss KL, it being on sale was the reason I could justify buying this top to get free shipping… I wasn’t sure about it when I pulled it out of the box- its a mens jacket so its pretty huge, but a few adjustments (cuffs rolled up, waist cinched in) and I am smitten.

If this last year has taught me anything, its that something good will always come to make up for the bad, as long as you keep pushing forward.  In life there will always be the potential for failure and loss, but you will certainly go no where if you never bother to try.

I’d say given the fact I run a blog, its obvious I believe in putting yourself out there! A huge part of blogging is trolling social media and brand platforms obsessively for inspiration.  I’ve mentioned many times before how much I wanted one of these La Mer wrap watches and even went so far as to DIY my own last summer. So when I saw this Earth Day-Giveaway on instagram, of course I clicked that little like button. Imagine my surprise, and excitement when I woke up the next morning with the notification that I had won! Follow them on instagram here. Its one of those things where if you want something bad enough – some how, some way – you’ll get it eventually! I was super impressed with them. I entered on Earth Day (April 22) the next morning they had notified me I had won, I emailed and within minutes they had e-mailed me a ship confirmation, one week later (to the day) this gorgeous watch had arrived on my doorstep, with a sweet card wishing me a Happy Earth Day.  You guys might have noticed that I am a big fan of the earth, check out the latest on my surface-rights blog here.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the gorgeous watch La Mer, keep up the amazing work! Live your life inspired by adventure!

mint & gold

mint blazer, gold sequin shorts, nude heels

blazer, blouse, heels by LeCHATEAU  ||  shorts – thrifted, similar here  ||  iPhone clutch, LA rings, skull ring, heart bangle, braided headband by ALDO

I have to make a confession, my infatuation with gold is relatively new… for years I was a strict silver jewelry girl, I also boycotted the color brown during this phase.  I decided for some reason that they were boring colors and should be reserved for old people.  Ahh, to be 15 again.  Thankfully I’m over it and now I am obsessed with gold jewelry, to the point where I am thinking about changing my medusa piercing to a gold gem, what do you think? I love how gold looks on tan skin, maybe in time for summer!

Last week we had a few days where it was like.. 18 whole degrees.. so I borrowed my BFFs blazer and busted out my new sequin shorts for a cute spring look. I love the color mint, but I always feel like it looks much better on blondes, generally I prefer bolder tones for myself.  That’s why its such a bonus to have a friend who’s clothes you can borrow!

To satisfy my gold-fever I just bought this gorgeous feather necklace from Silla, a local boutique in Kensington (they have a shop in Lethbridge as well) they have mostly jewelry and some cute hippie style clothing, its worth checking out for the beautiful displays alone! My brass branch ring is from a store down the street, Purr, and my turtle knuckle ring is from Manana Imports, which is a couple stores over.  Generally if I go shopping in Calgary I like to hit either Kensington or 17th Avenue, absolutely if you come visit those are the areas to see- cool shops, bars, restaurants and lots of interesting people.

The main reason that I love Kensington (and 17th) is all the consignment and vintage shops.  When I walked into Trends and laid eyes on these gold sequin shorts I actually squee’d with joy.  It was kinda embarrassing… then that doubled when I found a pair of mint leather shorts and double squee’d.  The thing is, I love shorts, and I love sparkles, and leather… so really I just couldn’t help but express my joy through a shrill squeal. Hope you ladies are even a fraction as excited to see this outfit as I was to wear it! Thanks for reading gorgeous girls!

More often than not, I can be found in some variation of this outfit.

I have to confess, I bought this top knowing full well it looks almost identical to a TNA one I already own.

Two differences- the TNA one, has a pocket AND this Quicksilver one is much longer- that was the real selling point.

Left - Quicksilver Right - TNA

TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

See I have mad love for all things striped and sweatery. Particularly in the grey/black/white family.  So obviously I couldn’t resist adding this gem to my shopping cart in order to qualify for free shipping.  I mean, its like getting the shirt for free, really. As much as I love my other one, its just too short for me to comfortably wear it with jeans, so I’m pretty happy with this one. There’s really nothing I love to wear more than a delicate knit, jeans and sneakers. Throw on a beanie, some bright sunnies and a few special accessories and you are good to go.   Also, say goodbye to my green sunnies, this post is the last you’ll see of them, I lost them over the weekend. (So tragic. This is why I buy super cheap sunnies all the time, I lose things constantly!)

Neutrals + Neon – easy spring DIY’s

DIY - Glitter Clutch and Neon Cap Toe Heels

skull ring, heart + cross bangles ALDO  || outfit LeCHATEAU – diy Cap Toe Heels & Glitter Clutch

Spring is finally here in Calgary! (No matter how it tries to get away- get out of here April snow we know you can’t hold on much longer!)  Cedric and I stepped out to enjoy the weather today, he had the best time running around the yard, did you notice him?!  I’m wearing few of my favourite trends for spring- a neutral relaxed top is my key wardrobe piece, I love the sheer back on this one, the light fabric and the cuffed sleeves- it just drapes perfectly for an easy, breezy cool look! Speaking of cool, I am determined to pave the way towards shorts, even though the weather really doesn’t merit it.

Mint and gold are two colors I have been obsessed with for ages- I made this DIY Glitter Clutch around this time last year and am still loving it!  Another spring trend I DIY’d? Neon + Nude ColorBlock Cap Toe Heels– super easy to make and a super cute spring trend to try! Both DIY’s are cheap, fast and easy- just how I like em!

I accessorized my outfit based around my spring inspiration DIY’s. I got this turquoise claw necklace while visiting one of my best girlfriends in Vancouver a few summers ago- she took me to this amazing little vintage shop and I have been dreaming of returning ever since! Whenever I wear it I remember summer fun with a beautiful friend! Subtle stacked gold bangles and mixed metal rings paired with colorful feather earrings add to the easy summer vibe. I’m dreaming of Coachella from Calgary I suppose!

casual camoflage

camo print leggings and an oversized henley

A little bit inspired by St. Patrick’s Day, but more because it finally started to feel like spring is in the air! I paired two of the greatest prints and  the biggest trends coming up for spring -floral and camouflage.camo leggings and floral bralet, billabong henley, le chateau owl necklace, leather cuff and lace vest, aldo rings and bangles Lately I’ve been embracing my inner hippie with a feather earring worn in the my conch.  I cannot wait to have the long hippie hair to go with it! Over-sized sunglasses, an adorable little owl pendant, and a knock-off Hermes studded cuff, all available at le chateau. The rest of the accessories (other than the vintage wooden bangle) “love” thumb ring, open head-to-head skull ring, and gold studded stretch bangle are all available at aldo.

conch wooden feather earring, love ring, and hermes leather cuffI love camo print, mostly because I’m a big green fan, but it also just gives that casual cool touch to an outfit. I had a dope pair of camo shorts that I donated a little while back just because I had them for so long.. then naturally, camo starts appearing everywhere! I have been searching for the perfect fitting pair of camo skinny jeans that don’t break the bank. I fell in love with this current elliott pair, but not the $198 price tag.  So the search for the perfect camo pant continues, meanwhile I couldn’t resist these $7 leggings from Sirens to embrace the trend a little without busting the college student budget!casual camoflageFloral, an annual spring trend, has been my BFF forever- I’m a girly girl at heart when it comes to clothes! The bustier is also from Sirens, retailing at a whopping $12 – it adds just a touch of print and the tiny floral print is unobtrusive enough to mix with the bold camo print.head to toe details - floral bralet and camo leggings by sirens, rings by aldo, jewelery and vest by le chateau, henly by billabongOn top I wore this Billabong Henley  its one of my favourite shirts because its honestly as comfortable as pajamas and its such a pretty, subtle shade of green. I bought it in extra-large so that I could get away with wearing it with leggings. I love buying over-sized tops, although I have to admit, I toe the line a bit when it comes to the leggings-are-not-pants rule. To add some shape to the over-sized top, and visually elongate the look, I layered a black cotton and lace vest from le chateau over top. That baby cost me a total of $5 so I keep it even though I only wear it once in a blue moon.

lace trim vest, black leather ankle boots

The ankle boots are from le chateau as well, old season.  The day after I took these my roomie brought home the most beautiful over the knee boots that would have been perfect! Thankfully we have the same sized feet so I promise you’ll be seeing them soon!Sunglasses and feather earring by le chateau

A major print – something that can be seen at a distance, pairs best with a minor print- something that is only noticeably printed when viewed close up.

Sheer Brilliance- neon, chiffon & boyfriend jeans

Take a simple black blouse and boyfriend jeans to the next level by adding bright coral accessories

DENIM by MAVI  ||  HEELS by GUESS  ||  BAG + BANGLES by ALDO  ||  BLOUSE + SUNNIES by LeCHATEAU

I have to admit, I am a matchy-matchy person by heart. The whole effortlessly-thrown-together-without-a-care look, I can’t quite do it, something always matches.  I mostly do this with my accessories, I love adding color to a look with punchy shoes or a great bag.  I bought these two pieces right around the same time. First I got the bag, then I found these beautiful Guess heels and I obviously HAD to have those too, after all, they matched.

Patent accessories are a nod to the neon trend dominating the runways for spring, pair with the menswear inspired pant and a chiffon blouse for balance. My roommate gave me these jeans because they didn’t fit her, lucky me! I love the relaxed fit of this Mavi boyfriend denim. I’m thinking of DIY destroying them a bit, perhaps when they get a bit more worn out, for now I have been enjoying the great wash and quality of the denim. When cuffing jeans roll up the hem in even sections (about an inch) to the slimmest part above your ankle, then scrunch the hems to make them look imperfect, but not unbalanced.

Since I’m already making style confessions here’s another- if I find an item that works really well for me, I often buy it in multiples. For example, I have this blouse in 4 colors… its a go-to for me because I love the fit and the drape. It looks  either casual or professional, depending on how you style it.  A bright bra underneath the sheer chiffon makes this look a bit edgy without being over the top. (I swear, it is actually quite subtle, even though in the one photo the flash illuminates the bra like a neon sign!) Choose a full coverage bra and a loose fitting sheer top to try this trend, and when in doubt, wear the same color or all black! If it’s not immediately obvious to you, the bra-baring trend is not an office appropriate look, leave this for Friday night!

enjoy your weekend girlies,

XO, AIYANA JANE

Thrift Store Find: Tailored Blazer

navy blazer with dark denim and grey for a perfect casual friday

thrift store finds - structured navy blazer

BLAZER by DERETA LONDON ||  BLOUSE by SMARTSET  || SUNNIES by ARDENE  ||  BEANIE + CLUTCH + SHOES by LeCHATEAU  ||  DENIM by BLUENOTES || ACCESSORIES by ALDO

One thing you may know about me by now is that I cannot resist a good deal- its why I love thrifting so much! My mother always said I could pick out the most expensive item in the store the moment I walk in- it’s this eye for the expensive (read: quality) that aides in my constant search for thrift store deals. This navy blazer jumped out at me immediately- the tailoring and the stitching are impeccable. I firmly believe that when you find something at a thrift store that is clearly good quality AND fits like a glove, that it’s a divine sign that you obviously NEED to buy that item. For me, $6.99 for a blazer that fit in all the right places was much too lovely of a deal to pass up!

Snow Leopard &

5 INANE (but somewhat relevant) facts about me…

When I get dressed I feel like every outfit has its own story, a memory attached, a character to play. The story is what turns your clothing into your style and everyone can read it. Its who you are for the day to every passing stranger making up stories in their minds. Just think of the places you could have been in other people’s imagination. Anyways, this outfit is a favourite story of mine… facts below.

xo aiyanajane

wearing all le chateau and a DIY WRAP WATCH

  1.  I am obsessed with teal! Teal, turquoise, bluish-green.. whatever you want to call it, its my very favourite color, that gorgeous ocean blue! It makes me wish I was back in the Dominican this March rather than being stuck in Calgary. There is another snow storm currently in progress and I am less than impressed… which brings me to facto numero..
  2.  I loathe snow. Straight up my greatest ambition, right after the hobbit house, is to move somewhere where it snows from very little to not at all. I like summer and water and warm. Not snow and ice, except of course, for Game of Thrones, AMIRITE?!   I’m not even linking it because if you don’t know about it by now you live under a rock. Season three starts on the 31st of March, which gives you plenty of time to marathon the first two seasons if you start now.  I recommend the books as well but I would be very impressed if someone managed to finish them between now and the season premier, that would be a LOT of reading. I mean A LOT. Anyways obviously, I am ridiculously excited about it! RIDICULOUSLY. I’m kind of a nerd.
  3. One of my other favourite things is leopard print, which I literally post on at least a monthly basis…  Regardless, these pony hair kitten heels are my absolute go to for city style! They have this moda-reflex technology which is supposedly the bomb, combined with the low heel they are very comfortable. Plus they go with everything and make it instantly 8 times cooler. That’s a fact. The pashmina combines two of my favourite things and add’s a nice pop of color to an otherwise neutral outfit.
  4. Skinny jeans or leggings and an oversized sweater is another go-to. The hybrid counterpart “jeggings” are what I’m wearing here. Remember when jegging’s came out? I made fun of them SO HARD, I’m actually pretty sure an exact quote was “Who the expletive would EVER buy expletiving jeggings?!” Well  these were ten dollars and I realized that really, jeggings are the best efffing thing since sliced bread. They are comfy and tight like leggings, but warm and thick like jeans. I wear one of the family (jean, legging, jegging) on a daily basis when Calgary hits its coldest ( FYI: it drops to more than -40°c sometimes) Thankfully it’s not nearly that cold now. I borrowed the sweater I’m wearing from my roomie/BFF. For the longest time, we were scared to live together because you know, it really can ruin friendships…like, FOREVER. Anyways I was in a pinch and she stepped up and its been amazing! We borrow each others things and cook together, and sit on the internet together. Its quite lovely because we are more like family than friends anyways. I love her the most. She took some amazing photos for the blog which I will put up soon!
  5. Another thing about me, I love DIY’s mostly because I am hella cheap to buy the real thing!  In the summer when I broke my pelvis and all I could do was surf the web and watch movies I found this La Mer Charm Watch that I could not stop obsessing over. I mean, I NEEDED IT. Except for I had ZERO money and so I crafted an alternative for less than $30. I’m extremely happy with it compared to the nearly $200.00 price tag of some of the La Mer ones.. (Which I still kind of want, but now I’m learning more towards a rose gold marc jacobs… in my dreams, hah.) My ring is a Celtic symbol which means mother, daughter, grandmother, I got it visiting my mother’s family in Scotland when we went there in 2008. My ultimate dream DIY, as mentioned above, is building my own hobbit house. SERIOUSLY.

thank you for reading my pretties… 😉
