Thank God its Friday!  What have you girls got planned for the weekend?  I’ve said it before, I live in this kind of business-casual uniform: skinnies, sunnies, blazer, beanie and a blouse.. it’s pretty fool proof!  In Calgary knowing how to layer is crucial, cold mornings, hot afternoons. I’m carrying every Canadian’s pre-work staple- the Extra Large Timmy-Ho’s.  Something most people don’t believe about me is that I hate coffee, in all its forms- if it’s coffee flavoured I do not want it in or around my mouth.  I take after my lovely mum, Earl Grey tea for me please!

This blazer is possibly my favourite ever- I posted The Basic’s Every Woman Needs and at the top of the list is a black blazer.  This one has all the things I look for- amazing seaming and tailoring, a single button, three-quarter sleeves and cute polka-dot lining!   I love the subtle polka dots with this striped knit top; shades of black, white and grey are perfect for foolproof print-mixing.   For work I lose the beanie and the aviators (and the scarf, its usually hot in the office) but these are all staple accessories for me to throw on every day! I usually like to wear flats on Friday to work, that way I can switch my shoes to dress up the look and last all night long in heels!

To dress up denim for work, every woman needs a good leather belt.  Truthfully, there are a great deal of hideous and impractical belts lurking on ladies sale racks- that’s why I head to the men’s department whenever I want a great basic leather belt- this one is from one of my favorite designer’s- Michael Kors.  Speaking of which, have you seen this Watch Hunger Stop campaign? 1 watch = 100 meals  and I really, really want the gold and turquoise watch.  A watch is another crucial investment piece for a woman, so why not be reminded that your watch helped someone? And that its pretty. So very pretty.

Speaking of pretty, Happy Friday to you! Have a fabulous weekend!

Brand Love – Victoria’s Secret

The other day I was in Victoria’s Secret because ever since I lost weight, I also dropped a bra size.  This is perfectly acceptable because then I am totally justified in going to Victoria’s Secret, otherwise known as the place where dreams are made.. Maybe it was the pink lighting or the double push-up bra I had just tried on, or the fact that I had just bought these skinny cargos for $20- but I was feelin’ good.  Since the demise of my camera outfit photos have been harder to take on the regular, so excuse the mirror selfies, but I figured it was better than nothing!

Also, pretty sure VS is practically a mandatory shop for any newly single gal.  Nothing to perk up your spirits quite like perking up your tits with a ridiculous amount of padding, amirite?  I never can actually bring myself to buy the double push up bra.. for one its just… not comfortable.. like where does the boob even go with all that padding in there???  Plus its false advertising and I’m okay with my chest size anyways. But its fun to try on and be like, oh, so that’s how the supermodels look so good.

I also just like to stop by VS on the regular to try on some styles so I know how they fit, then I order online- by shopping the clearance section of their website you can filter by size and save so much money! Shipping is a bit expensive (at least to Canada anyways, I assume in the States it’s marvelous to take advantage of their free shipping deals all the time!) but you can make up the price by shopping specials.  The website also just has so much more selection than stores (again, Canada) so its great so find out how styles fit in store, then you can pick whatever color you like online!  I have a bit of a bathing suit addiction (I justify it with a bit of a swimming addiction) so I have ordered from them many times and never been disappointed.  The one time anything went wrong was totally not their fault, a bottom came in a package marked as a top. I called them up and the replacement was here before I had even mailed back my extra bottoms.  Moral of the story is I am a big fan of the brand.

VS recently bought out the La Senza, which used to be the primary lingerie retailer in Canada, and even though they are now a sub-company or whatever the technical term is, their bra’s are still totally sub-par. I converted a couple of my friends to VS and they won’t go back.  There is a ton of debate in the lady community about bra sizing- obviously some people won’t be able to shop stores carrying a standard size range, I recommend everyone get professionally fitted.  That said, I am average sized in every way including boob size so I don’t have to drop mega-bucks on specialty bras, so I love Victoria’s Secret.  I noticed an immediate difference trying on a VS bra versus a La Senza one, even in the same cup size. The materials and quality are just so much better.   If I haven’t convinced you, just click here to browse through their new swim collection, and try to resist.

Sugar Skulls & Neons

city style, country smile

|| leather jacket, sugar skull pashmina, ring by LeCHATEAU  ||  beanie + sunnies by ARDENE  ||  cashmere cardigan, cotton tee by ZARA  || olive skinny jeans by BLUENOTES || iPhone clutch by ALDO  ||  over the knee boots by SPRING

Hey gorgeous girls! Embracing a couple of my favourite accessory trends today for spring. I got this sugar skull pashmina the other day and I completely love it, reminds me of the late, great Mr. McQueen ❤ paired with neon wayfarer’s and an -almost- neon beanie. I’m loving my hair more and more lately.. the lightening spray I’ve been using has totally worked wonders and its getting longer you guys!! I also gave in and bought myself this little Aldo iPhone wallet. You might remember I’ve been obsessed with this Michael Kors version, but I figured I would see if I liked the style of it before shelling out the big bucks. Still not totally decided- my phone ends up outside the case 90% of the time, but i love the little wallet and its beyond convenient for going out. Worth the $20 at least!

This leather jacket I’m wearing is my favourite (I even bought two and gave one to my cousin!) it was an unreal deal ($35 for genuine leather!?) and I love the fit and tailoring. Roll up the sleeves and layer a cashmere cardigan underneath for a warm and casual look. Layered over a basic white tee and olive skinnies to add a bit of color. I  borrowed my roomie’s boots, I love that we’re the same shoe size! These over the knee boots from Spring were on sale for $60, they are super comfortable and cute, but I do wish they were real leather!

I think I got my pashmina obsession from my mother, but honestly I can’t rave about them enough.  If you don’t wear them, get on it girl. Not only do they add a surprising amount of warmth but a statement scarf can instantly change the whole look of your outfit! Its an extremely easy way to add color or print to a basic outfit.

I hope you all have a lovely Easter long weekend. I’m looking forward to some much needed down time with my family and some serious hugs from my mom.

X Marks the Spot

Yesterday was depressing. Today, the first day of spring, started with hope and happiness!  I took a good long run (and stopped to do some yoga on the banks of the Bow River) enjoying the sunshine that finally hit Calgary.  Speaking of which, apparently our chilly city edged out the capital for the No. 1 city to live in Canada, so go team!  It was such a nice day today, I spend some extra time appreciating Bowmont Park, this city and all that it has to offer! (I still can’t wait for summer and stampede season though!)

wearing: clutch and tops by sirens  ||  beanie by joe fresh  ||  Converse low tops  ||  Bluenotes denim ||  sunnies by ardenes

I borrowed some of my roomie’s style for this post (the clutch and undershirt are hers, and she gave me these jeans) since certain color palettes look better on certain people, I also decided to borrow her hair color too since grey and blue look better on the blondes! I love this sweater and the little skulls give it some punky edge, by layering the chambray button-up underneath, the preppy polka dot collar makes this outfit a cool easy mix of styles.  Converse super low riders, skinny jeans and a beanie topper complete this easy layered spring look!

I was feeling a bit inspired as well by one of my favourite fictional characters ever as well, Veronica Mars, who is anything but a dumb blonde!  When I tell you I am obsessed with that show, know that I mean truly obsessed!  I was thinking about it because in the TV series Veronica presents such a strong and inspiring character *spoiler alert* particularly in the way she handles being sexually assaulted.  I always thought that she was such a smart and talented character for girls to look up to.  Then in season three, Veronica Mars was cancelled, and in its time slot was The Pussycat Dolls- Search for the Next Doll.  Shoot me.   Talk about another perfect example of rape culture and sex selling, I still remember my outrage that a well written show with a strong female lead character was axed for a bunch of bimbo strippers trying to be the next hyper-sexualized example of female perfection.  Okay, I’ll stfu about it, if you already read my Steubenville post, you’ve had more than enough.

Anyways, the real reason I bring up Veronica, is because my fictionalized female heroine is set to come to the big screen thanks to a Kickstarter fundraiser, where fans raised money for the film in less than 11 hours! More about that here! Honestly, if you have never seen the show, WATCH IT.  I hardly watch any TV, but when I find a series I love, its because it is worth watching.  It like if Sherlock Holmes met Pretty Little Liars. Veronica Mars people, she’ll be kicking some ass on screen sometime in early 2014, that gives you plenty of time to become a super-fan of the series before the movie.  Or if you’ve been a long time V Mars fan, which supporting characters are you hoping to see?  Personally if there is no Logan and Veronica resolution ima be upset.

Hope you started off your spring in style!!

Thrift Store Find: Tailored Blazer

navy blazer with dark denim and grey for a perfect casual friday

thrift store finds - structured navy blazer

BLAZER by DERETA LONDON ||  BLOUSE by SMARTSET  || SUNNIES by ARDENE  ||  BEANIE + CLUTCH + SHOES by LeCHATEAU  ||  DENIM by BLUENOTES || ACCESSORIES by ALDO

One thing you may know about me by now is that I cannot resist a good deal- its why I love thrifting so much! My mother always said I could pick out the most expensive item in the store the moment I walk in- it’s this eye for the expensive (read: quality) that aides in my constant search for thrift store deals. This navy blazer jumped out at me immediately- the tailoring and the stitching are impeccable. I firmly believe that when you find something at a thrift store that is clearly good quality AND fits like a glove, that it’s a divine sign that you obviously NEED to buy that item. For me, $6.99 for a blazer that fit in all the right places was much too lovely of a deal to pass up!

pink, plaid and puffy

I have had the worst cold all week long, and as a result my appearance has suffered.. rather than try to do my hair or makeup sometimes I would rather just throw on a blonde wig and sunnies… just to find out if blonde’s really do have more fun. One thing is for sure, it makes me wanna be blonde for reals!

To keep warm in the cold bundle up in lots of layers; a tanktop, a cardigan, a flannel shirt, a puffer vest, leggings and a beanie all working together to keep you warm! To define your waist and add a twist to the outfit, try a stretchy belt at the natural waist for emphasis!

the perfect beanie

Living in Calgary means I spend 85% of my year in temperatures I consider to be too cold… this is unfortunate. Another thing about me- I hate doing my hair, I’m lazy, especially in the grow out phase.. In light of those two things, half the time I throw on a toque and forget about it. Sadly they aren’t “office appropriate”… also unfortunate. Fortunately, the rest of the time, toques exist!

My favourite hat to wear right now is the slouchy toque.. beanie..cap.. hat.. whatever you want to call it- the point is its that perfect cozy knit, with just the right amount of detail and slouch. This style can go horribly awry, or maybe I’m just overly picky, however it takes me months to find the perfect topper sometimes. Just the right color, texture, fabric, price.. etc etc etc.

I had one that I absolutely LOVED. It was reversible.. I lost it shortly after this post– before the first snow even fell 😦

you are missed lovely toque.. I hope you warm a hobo’s head somewhere…

Suffice to say, I was pretty choked when I lost it… I mean I lost it back in the beginning of October and I STILL won’t shut up about it. But it was just perfect you know!? Well now I can look back on it and fondly remember its glory, because I found a new perfect slouchy hat! I’m totally obsessed with it!! Right now is the BEST time to shop winter accessories, all the stores have their fall/winter on mega clearance. Late February (not boxing day) is the best time to shop fall/winter clothing sales. I got this toque from le chateau for $9.99!

instaUPDATE

I’ve had a crazy week, I decided to live with my Grandparents on weekends, and  moved in with my best friend Michelle after having some issues with my previous living arrangements, so I have had no time for blogging with such a big change on such short notice, but I think this is going to be much better! In the mean time, insta-snapshots of my busy week.

Borrow from the Boys

my go to outfit for city style; SKINNIES, AN OVERSIZED SWEATER & ANKLE BOOTSborrow from the boys, menswear sweater

Almost every day in the winter I wear a variation on this look.. I live in baggy sweaters for 6 months of the year and looking in my closet its actually ridiculous how many striped sweaters I have. This one is my favourite though, its a bamboo blend XXL mens sweater from le chateau, with button closures on the shoulder. I layered it over a white silk tank top and paired it with navy skinny dress pants and open toe ankle boots. My obsession with obnoxiously bright sunglasses also continues as I rep the faux- rayban neon green wayfarers, finishing the look carrying a studded clutch and a long blingy pendant – le chateau head to toe, sunglasses from ardenes.

I love buying mens sweaters for layering, and since you don’t have to worry about buying a certain size you can find all sorts of gems in outlet stores and clearance racks. How many XXL dudes do you think would be wearing that sweater? Not a whole lot.. and that’s why it only cost me $13! I tend to lose sunglasses on a bi-weekly basis so I never buy brand name- Ardenes is my go to store for cheap and obnoxious sunglasses of all sorts!

FALL ESSENTIALS: HATS

My dear friends, I’ve been trying very hard not to be depressed about fall, I’m such a summer girl at heart. I do love autumn but here in Southern Alberta its rather short lived, and often seems to be a rather depressing prelude to winter.

So I’ve been looking for reasons to be okay with fall and HATS, my friends, are one very good reason to love fall. Forget about having to style your hair, throw on a beanie or a toque and embrace hat hair. For healthier hair banish your hot tools for a while- give your hair a break and hide it under a cute beret. Stick a dryer sheet in your purse just in case you get a case of crazy static hair. Its also one of the best ways to grow out an awkward pixie cut. Its been almost a year now since I started growing mine out, and last winter I absolutly LIVED in hats. I mean every single day I wore one. The beanie style I’m wearing is my favourite, but I also love slouchy toques like the one I wore here– really anything slouchy and cozy!

Then right after I posted about my fall must have: leopard button down, I found this shirt in the Thorny Rose Cafe right here in my hometown of Rosebud, Alberta. It must have been fate, and I believe I was destined to have it. The Thorny Rose is a super cute little cafe (they make the best cookies EVER) that also sells knick-knacks and consignment clothing. This Jones New York blouse was a steal at only $10!

*

I accessorized my 70’s inspired outfit with a simple brown leather belt (vintage), and wedges from payless.

The jeans are my absolute FAVOURITE pair, I bought them from le chateau when I worked there but they are Aphrodite brand. They fit just right, have the perfect amount of stretch, subtle flare, and a versitle dark wash. A great pair of jeans in an essential for anytime of the year, I recommended these to one of my good friends and she’s worn them to death as well!  The hat and the cameo ring are from le chateau as well, all other jewelry is vintage or imported. Oh, and here’s Evie being cute! PS – she’s expecting! YAY!

Then go from DAY TO DATE with a BANDAGE SKIRT and BRIGHT PUMPS.
