skirt BAND OF GYPSIES || blouse + shoes + blazer LeCHATEAU || sunnies ARDENE

To make it over hump-day, when thinking about anything other than the rest of the week seems like too daunting of a task,  I tend to lean towards black & white.   Usually when I get dressed I base my outfit around a single “inspiration” piece.   Here I wanted the print on the skirt to be the center of attention so I paired it with a tuxedo blouse and my trusty nude pumps.   I am  actually obsessed with this skirt for summer – I love the print.. aztec? tribal?   Whatever you want to call it, I am a fan of the abstract black and white!  It’s a lovely silk  skater skirt with an elastic waist, which makes it super comfortable, light, cool and perfectly floaty.  All prerequisites for any great piece!

This combination of a fit and flare skirt and a 3/4 sleeve button-up it my absolute go-to for a fool-proof chic outfit.  This outfit flatters all body shapes, just make sure the skirt sits at the smallest part of your mid-section and tuck in a silk blouse. I have about 7 versions of this blouse, all basically the same cut just in different colors/fabrics and embellishments… and you don’t even want me to count the number of skirts I have.  They pair together in endless, perfect possibilities though!  To cover up, a single-button blazer is also the most flattering style because it will nip in right at the waist, invest in a great tailored piece that will stay classic for years.

A printed skirt like this is a nod towards all the Stampede going-on’s without being too costume-y for work.  A tailored blazer keeps it professional and a button up blouse balances the short hemline.    To take this look from the “work” to “western” switch to a pair of cowboy boots and add a denim vest!  Or, just take a break mid-week, if like me, you’re still recovering from a weekend full of stampede “spirit”!   Most residents like to show a little spirit.. but an entire ten days of western themed regalia (and festivities) is a bit too much for the best of us.

If ever standing in front of the closet in doubt, I just choose black, white and grey.  That in mind, when I found this cardigan and immediately scooped it up;  the sheer front panel and light cotton blend made it the perfect cardigan for over-cast summer days.  My love affair with leather (okay, this is faux!) continues with these studded black loafers, and skinny ankle-zip pants.   I mentioned HERE that I revert to my rocker side for comfort,  so studs, leather, aviators and a skull scarf  is a classic choice for me.

What is your go-to outfit for a comfort day?

These shorts are probably one of my most worn items in my closet,  I bought them a couple years ago by now, but I am still constantly going back to them again and again!  I just love anything that glitters, I cannot resist.  If there is one drawback about my gold sequin pair it’s that they don’t have pockets – I hate not having pockets!  Sometimes when I get dressed I just go for all my favourite things- in this case simple silver jewelry from the Dominican Republic, classic aviators and a patent leather statement clutch pair with polka dots perfectly to complement my sparkling shorts! Metallic heels finish the look for polished city style that’s classic and cool.

I am in love with this blouse, the style is my absolute favourite- when shopping for tunic blouses I often go up a size so they will drape nicer and fall just a little longer.  My other requirements for finding the perfect blouse is 3/4 length sleeves and half button-down – the contrasting black and white  and the polka-dot print had me sold.  I love a chiffon blouse and shorts for summer, its chic and cool!

Black and white outfit with red heels

|| blazer, belt (similar), heels, clutch by LeCHATEAU  || leather shorts by JESSICA SIMPSON  ||

I mentioned before that I bought this blazer right before I lost a bunch of weight, then it was too big for me to wear and I was sad!  Never one to give up a great piece over something simple like size, I decided to cinch the waist in with this kimono inspired leather belt.  Okay, its actually pleather… but guess how much it cost me? 50 cents – YEAH BUDDY.

Bold stripes and shoulders on this blazer tend to make a girl look boxy, especially when wearing a couple sizes too large – an obi belt cinches the waist and breaks up the stripes, giving the illusion of a tiny midsection.  I love the natural texture of the (faux) leather paired with the bold graphic stripes – leather shorts and an over-sized patent envelope clutch play it up even more. Black and white continues to be one of my favourite trends for spring, maybe its my inner Canadian but I love punching up this trend with a pop of red – these suede platform pumps are perfect.  My little brother gave me these shades after I complained and complained about how the nose piece of my aviators gets tangled in my hair, causing some serious white girl problems. He’s the best, I always steal his sunnies and he always lets me – I’ve never worn white sunglasses before but I like these ones, maybe because the arms are black, or maybe because they were free!

I mentioned before that I love jewelry with a story- I brought this panther bangle back from Punta Cana, then it broke!  Fortunately for me I have the most amazing grandfather- the man can fix anything, and he fixed my bangle for me with a little welding or soldering or something.  Every time I look at it I think of a beautiful trip and my sweet grandfather.  My Celtic knot ring is from Scotland, the turtle ring is from my uncle’s store in Kensington, the gold branch ring is from another local boutique, Purr.  I tend to fidget, so this way each twist of my ring takes me back to a memory with my family somewhere special.  Speaking of somewhere special, I leave for Denmark in just a few days- I am so excited you guys!  So much to do in the next couple days to prepare!

Prepare to most likely see a lot of this bag- bite marks and all- I’m super into the nude and gold tones for spring and its ideally sized!  I accessorized with a cute little starfish charm bracelet and stacked rings from Aldo accessories.  Everytime I go in there I want something else, today I saw this nautical striped bag that would have been perfect for my outfit! Since I linked it and its not in the photos, I trust you can tell I managed to resist. Plus, mine is better anyways 😛

Onto the outfit.  When I get dressed, what I really want is to be comfortable.  This outfit has my two favourite comfy basics- a relaxed cotton tee and dark wash skinny jeans.  My office is pretty casual so I get to wear jeans every day, I usually dress them up with a blazer.  This linen blazer kinda reminds me of chambray, and since denim-on-denim is having such a moment, I figured I would show some pride and bust out the Canadian Tuxedo.. sort of… the blazer is a bit of a cheat not being actual denim.  I have a love/hate relationship with linen… the wrinkles… there are no words, but this blazer eliminates that by having ruched details already so wrinkles don’t matter, fabulous!  The fabric has quite noticeable stretch (which I love in a blazer) and it is very light and cool.  Linen is often exclusively a spring and summer fabric (certainly in stores), which is why I find myself busting this jacket out as soon as the snow melts! (This time, stay away you white fluffy devil!)

Blue has always been my favourite color, it can basically be treated like a neutral, many people don’t seem to realize how versatile it is!  I’ve mentioned before how a scarf can make a simple outfit stand out- that’s absolutely the case here!   I paired simple basics with a bold, red, anchor printed pashmina, I love the black and white stripe detailing on the edges of it, pointy toe kitten heels and ruby lips finish the look. With a few accessories denim basics become a sweet sailor inspired outfit.

Paris is always a good idea…

… and how I wish I could run off to Paris forever some days! My youngest brother is there now so I think my desire to flee to Europe is exponentially higher due to jealousy!  We missed him over the Easter holidays but I had a lovely time relaxing with my family, visiting my horses and all the new baby calves! It’s so important for me to get home to the farm and remember that life always goes on- even when it feels like its ending because some moron decided to dump you out of the blue by text message because you finally got the job you’ve been working for and aren’t running back to be with him. Obviously I’m not bitter about it at all. . .

Whenever I find myself having a difficult time emotionally, I find myself turning to strong women for comfort.  Sometimes I think about the women in my life and how unbelievably strong and inspirational they can be, I feel blessed to have been surrounded by beautiful, resilient women.  As girls, so often we feel like we need a man to comfort and hold us, but the greatest comfort rarely comes from a mans touch, but rather from the kindness or wisdom of a mother. A perfect embodiment of the kind of woman I am talking about is one of the most iconic actresses who has always inspired me, Audrey Hepburn. What I love about her is the openness with which she always gave her heart- she just loved fully and followed her heart without hesitation, even into painful places. The most beautiful women, as she says, are those who are unapologetic about their heart. An absolute fashion icon, you can see in her style that she always did what she loved – something about her begs for classic black and white feminine style.  Inspired by Audrey, I love this simple, chic look- perfectly paired with my favorite quotes from a woman I think we all could learn a great deal from.

“YOUR HEART JUST BREAKS, that’s all. but you can’t judge or point fingers. you just have to be LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND SOMEONE WHO APPRECIATES YOU.”  ― Audrey Hepburn

You have to look at yourself objectively. Analyze yourself like an instrument. You have to be absolutely frank with yourself. Face your handicaps, don’t try to hide them. Instead, develop something else.

“i believe that LAUGHING IS THE BEST CALORIE BURNER. i believe in kissing, KISSING A LOT. i believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. i believe that HAPPY GIRLS ARE THE PRETTIEST GIRLS. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES.”  ― Audrey Hepburn

I’ve always been very girly – even though I went through a decade long tom-boy phase thanks to growing up in a tiny farming community – but since leaving I love wearing outfits that appeal to my inner princess. A black and white polka dot chiffon blouse tucked into a flouncy faux-leather mini and accessorized with bows and ruffles satisfies all my sartorial desires.   I remember in my week of school (like back in grade one) I wore this beautiful sky blue lace ruffle dress, and all the kids made fun of me.. so after years of jeans and hoodies, sometimes I think I like to wear excessively girly outfits on an average day now just because I can, and because I no longer care if the other kids want to make fun of my feminine side! When I have a bad day I like to wear clothes that make me feel happy and beautiful! What better outfit to start spring (because its finally here in Calgary!)

cut out peplum + leather shorts

Peplum continues to be a strong trend for spring, but gets an update with a cut out back and leather shorts. I love these wedge heels, they are patent and suede and ever so comfortable.   Wearing shorts with tights is the perfect way to elongate your body- stick to matching colors for the shorts, tights and shoes to fake mile long legs.   If you follow on instagram, you know I was over the moon to find the long-lost pair to the earrings that I’m wearing here. I kept the solo earring because I’m a hoarder and then miraculously found its pair two years later in the bag I was carrying here!  Keeping with the black and white trend I carry my “Chanel” bag, which I am quite certain is not really Chanel, but its a really well constructed bag that’s the perfect size for every day and it didn’t cost me a grand.  Oddly, its also the only purse I’ve ever had multiple MEN compliment me on, so that’s something I guess, since dudes generally don’t notice accessories.

X Marks the Spot

Yesterday was depressing. Today, the first day of spring, started with hope and happiness!  I took a good long run (and stopped to do some yoga on the banks of the Bow River) enjoying the sunshine that finally hit Calgary.  Speaking of which, apparently our chilly city edged out the capital for the No. 1 city to live in Canada, so go team!  It was such a nice day today, I spend some extra time appreciating Bowmont Park, this city and all that it has to offer! (I still can’t wait for summer and stampede season though!)
x marks the spot

wearing: clutch and tops by sirens  ||  beanie by joe fresh  ||  Converse low tops  ||  Bluenotes denim ||  sunnies by ardenes

I borrowed some of my roomie’s style for this post (the clutch and undershirt are hers, and she gave me these jeans) since certain color palettes look better on certain people, I also decided to borrow her hair color too since grey and blue look better on the blondes! I love this sweater and the little skulls give it some punky edge, by layering the chambray button-up underneath, the preppy polka dot collar makes this outfit a cool easy mix of styles.  Converse super low riders, skinny jeans and a beanie topper complete this easy layered spring look!

I was feeling a bit inspired as well by one of my favourite fictional characters ever as well, Veronica Mars, who is anything but a dumb blonde!  When I tell you I am obsessed with that show, know that I mean truly obsessed!  I was thinking about it because in the TV series Veronica presents such a strong and inspiring character *spoiler alert* particularly in the way she handles being sexually assaulted.  I always thought that she was such a smart and talented character for girls to look up to.  Then in season three, Veronica Mars was cancelled, and in its time slot was The Pussycat Dolls- Search for the Next Doll.  Shoot me.   Talk about another perfect example of rape culture and sex selling, I still remember my outrage that a well written show with a strong female lead character was axed for a bunch of bimbo strippers trying to be the next hyper-sexualized example of female perfection.  Okay, I’ll stfu about it, if you already read my Steubenville post, you’ve had more than enough.

Anyways, the real reason I bring up Veronica, is because my fictionalized female heroine is set to come to the big screen thanks to a Kickstarter fundraiser, where fans raised money for the film in less than 11 hours! More about that here! Honestly, if you have never seen the show, WATCH IT.  I hardly watch any TV, but when I find a series I love, its because it is worth watching.  It like if Sherlock Holmes met Pretty Little Liars. Veronica Mars people, she’ll be kicking some ass on screen sometime in early 2014, that gives you plenty of time to become a super-fan of the series before the movie.  Or if you’ve been a long time V Mars fan, which supporting characters are you hoping to see?  Personally if there is no Logan and Veronica resolution ima be upset.

Hope you started off your spring in style!!

Beetlejuice Blazer

I bought this blazer right before I started my weight loss journey, as a result I wore it once before it was too big for me! Today it was actually warm enough to go without a coat here in Calgary, so I layered a hoodie underneath to stay warm and make up for the loose fit! My bestie and I were going to get some new fishies (I had a casualty, sadly) I didn’t know what to wear and she loves this blazer (she’s the one who started calling it my “beetlejuice blazer”) so I wore it.  When I started layering the hoodie under the blazer she said “I dont think you can do that” , to which I replied “I can do whatever I want!”  since today marks day one of trying to wear everything I own, so I’m gonna have to be creative!! I hope you like!

INSTA-update

so far this DECEMBER

instaweek 8-12-12Sometimes i feel like all i do is complain about my injuries.. but i have been on a streak. these last two weeks have been no exception, now you see why there have been no outfit posts of late… black eyes are not chic.

1 –  I gave myself a black eye by trying to use a spinning chair as something to lean on.. I guess curly hair helps hide black eyes?  2 –  Cedric snuggles make me feel better.  3 – Dried flowers and feathers in the hanging planter on my deck.  4 – My roommate knit me this hat! I love it! I’m wearing more makeup than I ever do, hiding my bruises for work- remember to tip your waitress this holiday season!  5 – My kitties are bad, climbing up on the table!  6 – They are also ninjas.. I looked back and they had silently switched positions. it was wierd~  7 –  reading my horoscope while waiting in the doctors office for x-rays on my elbow (I fell down the stairs) …it seemed pretty accurate.  8 – I bought some new sunnies, as the black eye stays firmly in place all week.  9 – Bird feeders in the snowy trees, beautiful. Thank god for Chinooks, or Calgary winter would be unbearable.  10 – Redecorating; I got some new fishies, and covered my lamp with a cherry blossom pashmina.  11- More snuggles with Cedric, he is honestly the sweetest, I’m so thankful to have him.  12-  Missing my girls, won’t get to see them until Christmas. ❤

menswear madness!

A menswear inspired business casual look is one of my favourite styles to wear, especially for summer because I love wearing shorts with a blazer!!

The key to getting this look right is to keep the feminine details,  and make sure your pieces FIT properly, not too tight or too loose and keep an eye on your proportions! Keep in mind its only menswear inspired, you aren’t dressing up in drag!

*

Here are a few of my favourite celeb menswear inspired looks:

kate mara

emma stone

ashley green

ginnifer goodwin

anne hathaway

alexa chung, goddess of the menswear look.

*

Tips on getting it right:

1. Stick to neutral pieces..
then add color with accessories or makeup. I love a red lip with a menswear inspired outfit.
2. Don’t over-accessorize..
carry only a small classic bag, wear stud earrings, a bold ring, cuff bangle or a watch.
3. Emphasize your waist!
with a belt (like emma),  a corset (like ashley) or high-waist bottoms (like ginnifer or alexa)
4. Wear dark colors on the bottom..
black, navy, brown or grey will slim visually, while white widens, it also shows wrinkles more.
5. Wear heels!!
Unless you are long and lean like the lovely Alexa up there, wear a heel! Choose something that doesn’t cut off at the ankle I love a pointy toe as it elongates the leg more (Ginnifer,  ilu.. but those shoes are not right,  Kate Mara’s shoe choice is bang on)
6. Mix structure, with softness..
Alexa gets the look perfect with a great structured pair of shorts, paired with a silky light button down and a blazer that fits just right.
7. Do print properly, or not at all..
Kate’s sheer blouse and polka dot blazer add a feminine twist to the masculine trend, while Anne’s graphic tee is too casual. Had she pushed up the sleeves of her blazer and worn the shirt half-tucked she could maybe have gotten away with the casual look, but the long sleeves and the wrinkly suit are her undoing.

*

And my way of wearing the menswear trend:

My thought process:  The shorts are highwaisted, have pleating (to add structure and femininity) and are slimming being black. The shirt is silk, loosely draped and bright white, plus the scoop neck makes it more girly. Wearing solid black and white pieces is totally reminiscent of a tux, keep it polished by tucking in the blouse and when shopping for high-waist pieces make sure they hit on the narrowest part of your waist. Next I chose a  grey snakeskin belt to add a little polish and a little print (and it keeps the shorts sitting where they should be) without being overwhelming. Grey stilettos to elongate the legs in a neutral color to match the belt,  without being too overly matchy.  (I have shoes with the same snakeskin print too and that was a tempting choice.) I picked a  long grey cashmere sweater, because it was cold, and I wasn’t in the mood for a blazer. Then I wore very minimal accessories.. (a bangle- which broke to my great dismay and small turquoise drop earrings) and I carried my every day purse which I have been obsessed with since I got it months ago. I’m carrying it here: https://citystylecountrysmile.wordpress.com/2012/05/05/makeup-tutorial-what-i-wore-today/
