Chambray, Sweater & Sunnies by LE CHATEAU |  Boots by Spring  | Belt & Rings via Manana Imports

Chambray has been a trend I have been hesitant to embrace for the longest time.. and I don’t even know why.  Its one of those things I love on everyone else but can never quite get to like on myself. Until now.  This blouse is a nod to the trend that is absolutely taking over, but its a bit of a cheat – the top is actually a light cotton/linen blend, not very denim-like at all.. which is probably why I ended up with it after literally years of hesitation to embrace the chambray-way. I always found it so stiff- this fabric is light and soft!  I also love the pin-tucking detailing on the bust- its classic tailoring that finishes a piece to make it very flattering; look for little tailored details like this when you shop.

At this point I’ve basically accepted that we aren’t getting a summer here in Alberta.. its been rainy and overcast and determinedly MEH.  (The amount of complaining I do about the weather here, you’d think this was a climate blog and not about style. )  Always trying to look on the bright side (but rarely succeeding)  at least August means fall fashion is in full swing.  In Canada we dress the way the rest of the world dresses for fall about 90% of the year (and the rest of the time we’re snuggled up in parkas in our igloos) so you have to be good with layers in order to live here.

One thing I always do with everything is roll up the sleeves.  Unless its the dead of winter, my sleeves are pushed up to my elbows; I rolled the sleeves up prior to putting the sweater on (that way they’re even) and then cuffed the chambray sleeve over it.  I love the multi-color stripes on this sweater, and the length is perfect for layering over this tunic so that I can wear it with tights. I don’t buy into the “leggings aren’t pants” movement…  as far as I’m concerned if you can’t see crotch, then pants are for the weak.  Our house motto is “Everyday feels like Sunday when you don’t wear pants.”  Its truly liberating, I recommend you try it.

Another layering essential? The belt; this one is hand beaded leather from Guatemala.  If you live in Calgary stop by Manana Imports in Kensington for fair trade pieces from all over the world. This leather bound sketchbook and all the rings are from Manana as well; it’s my uncle’s store and I help out from time to time but I end up just shopping!  Come visit sometime.

With Calgary being it it’s current unsettled and somewhat submerged state, I have been feeling a little ironically inspired with everything nautical.  Truth be told I just love nautical for spring/summer every year, and normally it’s not ironic because generally Alberta doesn’t flood itself into oblivion but I digress..
You probably all realize by now that I’m a sentimental type… and a bit wordy, but I firmly believe the best kind of fashion is the kind with a story behind it.  That’s why this outfit makes me so happy.  For one, I’m wearing this old band tee, which was one of the first shows I attended at the tender age of 15 (ish), I love going to shows, I have many more band tee’s to style!  This one is a little tight and short from years of dryer assaults so usually I just sleep in it, but looks adorable tucked into a high-waist skirt!
A fit and flare skirt like this is probably my #1 essential wardrobe piece.. seriously they flatter EVERYONE.  To find the most flattering fit it should sit at the natural waist (the smallest part of your midsection) and a few inches above the knee if you have short legs like me!
For nautical looks, red and navy are a sure bet and whenever I want to instantly feel more fabulous I put on red heels and red lipstick!  This Clinique High Impact Lipstick in Red-y to Wear is another absolute essential.
I found this 100% cotton skirt in Denmark while I was shopping with the beautiful Andrea Rungholm, who sent me this H&M necklace for Christmas last year-  she’s so sweet! I chose punk inspired silver bangles from punta cana and rings from a selection of my favourite Calgary boutiques.  Wearing clothes that remind me of people or experiences I love is what makes personal style so interesting to me, its why I love reading other blogs to see all the little differences and quirks!
This polka-dot skirt reminds me of one of my favourite bloggers who is always so sweet and happens to really love polka-dots.  Who else but the lovely Yi-Chia of Always Maylee, she’s hosting a really inspiring giveaway with Elegantee’s;  all of their clothes are sewn by women rescued from human trafficking. Be sure to check it out!

Black and white outfit with red heels

|| blazer, belt (similar), heels, clutch by LeCHATEAU  || leather shorts by JESSICA SIMPSON  ||

I mentioned before that I bought this blazer right before I lost a bunch of weight, then it was too big for me to wear and I was sad!  Never one to give up a great piece over something simple like size, I decided to cinch the waist in with this kimono inspired leather belt.  Okay, its actually pleather… but guess how much it cost me? 50 cents – YEAH BUDDY.

Bold stripes and shoulders on this blazer tend to make a girl look boxy, especially when wearing a couple sizes too large – an obi belt cinches the waist and breaks up the stripes, giving the illusion of a tiny midsection.  I love the natural texture of the (faux) leather paired with the bold graphic stripes – leather shorts and an over-sized patent envelope clutch play it up even more. Black and white continues to be one of my favourite trends for spring, maybe its my inner Canadian but I love punching up this trend with a pop of red – these suede platform pumps are perfect.  My little brother gave me these shades after I complained and complained about how the nose piece of my aviators gets tangled in my hair, causing some serious white girl problems. He’s the best, I always steal his sunnies and he always lets me – I’ve never worn white sunglasses before but I like these ones, maybe because the arms are black, or maybe because they were free!

I mentioned before that I love jewelry with a story- I brought this panther bangle back from Punta Cana, then it broke!  Fortunately for me I have the most amazing grandfather- the man can fix anything, and he fixed my bangle for me with a little welding or soldering or something.  Every time I look at it I think of a beautiful trip and my sweet grandfather.  My Celtic knot ring is from Scotland, the turtle ring is from my uncle’s store in Kensington, the gold branch ring is from another local boutique, Purr.  I tend to fidget, so this way each twist of my ring takes me back to a memory with my family somewhere special.  Speaking of somewhere special, I leave for Denmark in just a few days- I am so excited you guys!  So much to do in the next couple days to prepare!

More often than not, I can be found in some variation of this outfit.

I have to confess, I bought this top knowing full well it looks almost identical to a TNA one I already own.

Two differences- the TNA one, has a pocket AND this Quicksilver one is much longer- that was the real selling point.

Left - Quicksilver Right - TNA

TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

See I have mad love for all things striped and sweatery. Particularly in the grey/black/white family.  So obviously I couldn’t resist adding this gem to my shopping cart in order to qualify for free shipping.  I mean, its like getting the shirt for free, really. As much as I love my other one, its just too short for me to comfortably wear it with jeans, so I’m pretty happy with this one. There’s really nothing I love to wear more than a delicate knit, jeans and sneakers. Throw on a beanie, some bright sunnies and a few special accessories and you are good to go.   Also, say goodbye to my green sunnies, this post is the last you’ll see of them, I lost them over the weekend. (So tragic. This is why I buy super cheap sunnies all the time, I lose things constantly!)

Prepare to most likely see a lot of this bag- bite marks and all- I’m super into the nude and gold tones for spring and its ideally sized!  I accessorized with a cute little starfish charm bracelet and stacked rings from Aldo accessories.  Everytime I go in there I want something else, today I saw this nautical striped bag that would have been perfect for my outfit! Since I linked it and its not in the photos, I trust you can tell I managed to resist. Plus, mine is better anyways 😛

Onto the outfit.  When I get dressed, what I really want is to be comfortable.  This outfit has my two favourite comfy basics- a relaxed cotton tee and dark wash skinny jeans.  My office is pretty casual so I get to wear jeans every day, I usually dress them up with a blazer.  This linen blazer kinda reminds me of chambray, and since denim-on-denim is having such a moment, I figured I would show some pride and bust out the Canadian Tuxedo.. sort of… the blazer is a bit of a cheat not being actual denim.  I have a love/hate relationship with linen… the wrinkles… there are no words, but this blazer eliminates that by having ruched details already so wrinkles don’t matter, fabulous!  The fabric has quite noticeable stretch (which I love in a blazer) and it is very light and cool.  Linen is often exclusively a spring and summer fabric (certainly in stores), which is why I find myself busting this jacket out as soon as the snow melts! (This time, stay away you white fluffy devil!)

Blue has always been my favourite color, it can basically be treated like a neutral, many people don’t seem to realize how versatile it is!  I’ve mentioned before how a scarf can make a simple outfit stand out- that’s absolutely the case here!   I paired simple basics with a bold, red, anchor printed pashmina, I love the black and white stripe detailing on the edges of it, pointy toe kitten heels and ruby lips finish the look. With a few accessories denim basics become a sweet sailor inspired outfit.

instaUPDATE

I’ve had a crazy week, I decided to live with my Grandparents on weekends, and  moved in with my best friend Michelle after having some issues with my previous living arrangements, so I have had no time for blogging with such a big change on such short notice, but I think this is going to be much better! In the mean time, insta-snapshots of my busy week.

shea marie at PEACE LOVE SHEA

cheyenne meets chanel

Shea Marie is one of those girls that you just wish you could step into her shoes for a day. Her blog follows her transition from a small town to a big city, a willowy blonde living in Hollywood, with that California cool girl style that I absolutely covet. I’ve posted before about how different my style would be if I didn’t live in a country that shorts are only  really wearable for 3 months of the year. I love reading her blog and pretending that one day I’ll move to Hollywood and be a stylist, and a writer and go to fancy parties in leopard shorts because its warm enough to do that!

jessie kass at SEAMS FOR A DESIRE

jessie kassIf you have Pinterest, you’ve probably seen her outfits. I love this blog for inspiration, every outfit she posts is so chic and she is a master accessorizer. I’d die for a chance to raid her jewelry collection (who am I kidding, her whole closet) and I have some serious hair envy, why can’t mine be that long? She always balances textures, fits, colors and prints in her looks and comes up with something beautiful and interesting. Her latest post promised Q&A and i’m super excited for the answers to come, so I can read all about this girl I worship from afar!

She always looks so perfectly put together, and is so driven, smart and talented. I love her view on fashion, and admire her strength. Read her story here.

andrea at  ANDREA RUNGHOLM.DK

andrea rungholm blonde danish gold khaki style

Andrea has always been a passionate, outgoing and energetic girl, who is wise and mature beyond her years. I must admit, this one has a little bias behind it. Andrea and I are related.. usually for simplicity’s sake I say we’re cousins but she’s actually my dad’s cousin’s daughter so I have no idea what the proper name for our somewhat distant relation is. She lives in Denmark, so we rarely see each other, but she stayed with our family and went to school here for a few months, and it was almost like having a sister. . I love her blog for fitness inspiration, and wish she didn’t live in Denmark so I could benefit from her cooking, since even when she stayed with us years ago she was already a master in the kitchen! She also always looks super chic and shops at affordable stores like Zara and H&M.

I miss her lots, I feel like she’s the sister I never had and hate being separated by an ocean! She’s very smart and I wanted to share her latest post because it’s the kind of thing that makes me think we are sister’s from different mothers! (Since I’m sure my mother would say the same as hers, and I would have the same rebuttal!)

On blogging:

” I believe that, overall, are three positions for it to have a blog. As the first, “What is the purpose and why should some bother looking images of what she has for breakfast?” The other, “Blogs are so inspiring and you get so many tips, tricks and I love reading blogs.” The third reason relates a part of those who read my blog through postings on Facebook because they know me,  “The fact that blogging is a waste of time and you do not get the right picture to the blogger”.  I think in some cases that many bloggers do those things. –  makes two breakfasts, one to the blog and you actually eat. Shows that you’ve got something sponsored whatever it is, tampons, just because you have got it for free. When you have a blog, you have 100% control over how you want to present themselves and how the blog should be. You can make up his own little world. In some cases, an blogger a very misleading picture of themselves – whether it is because you want to be someone else or you want attention, is so different. Some time ago my mother asked me: “Why do you never photos of your messy room? So it does not seem so perfect all the time and your readers might real with a little more to you? “. I could take a picture of you when my apartment fiddling very most and I could easily take a picture for you right when I’m just waking up and looks like something you’d think would never get to see normally again. I can see that it will give you a picture of that I am down to earth and I do not distort my life into something it is not, but what would the purpose just so be it? There is certainly no one wants to see pictures of an apartment cluttering and even fewer than none at all, who wants to see me tomorrow really ugly? It may be it gives a few good laughs, but it gives when absolutely no inspiration. The purpose of my blog is to give good tips, recipes and outfits that can inspire others. Not to make myself as something I’m not; without sounding too self-centered, I am happy for who I am, what I have and as I look. The bottom line is that I hope you see me as an honest blogger and I enjoy reading my blog. “

what i wore

I recently picked up this cropped hunter green cable knit sweater, its perfect for fall don’t you think!?

sweater+ watch – walmart ~ plaid + pearls + denim~ le chateau ~ boots – winners ~ bag – mat and nat

I layered the sweater over a plaid shirt that I had left over from a Stampede season long past, rolled up the sleeves and tucked it into mid-rise skinny jeans. The sweater is a cropped and boxy, so the higher rise denim works better with the proportions. Then I added a multi-strand pearl and gold statement necklace and a bracelet watch I had from the Arm Candy DIY. I carried my cherished magenta mat + nat cross-body bag- I loved the way the pink and green popped together- and added brown boots and a belt to finish the look!

I’m still recovering from having a painting fall on my face and an infection in my right eyelid from my Halloween costume, so I went for bright pink lips to distract from my swollen eye! Bold lips and well groomed brows make a statement, and its a super easy makeup look. Keeping with the simple theme I rocked the top knot to keep my hair out of my face and the focus on my necklace!

 remember- keep smiling! xo, a
