Favourite Things

When I’m in a rush (which in the morning I often am) I tend to go back to pieces that I really, really love. My favourite color is teal blue, like when you look at the ocean and its the most magical shade – I pretty much like any color remotely close to that blue-green spectrum, which is why this pashmina is possibly my favourite scarf I own. I bought it while I was working at Le Chateau, and I NEVER bought stuff right when it came in, but this scarf was different, as I opened the stock box and unwrapped it from its plastic tomb, I just knew that scarf needed to come home with me. I never regretted it. Maybe this is why I’m okay with no kids – I treat clothing like my little rescue babies. You’ll come home with me my pretties, and I will love you, you will not be forgotten at the back of some unfashionable closet somewhere.

I have similar feelings about these pants ($11), shoes($60), bag ($40) and jacket($35). They have a few things in common, all were on sale – the shoes, bag and skinnies at Winners, the jacket I got at a Le Chateau outlet for half off the sale price. If you go to an outlet and hunt through the racks of polyurethane you will be sure to find a few genuine leather or suede pieces at really great prices! The key to great bargain shopping is patience. I prefer to go alone so no one is waiting on me or, alternatively, slowing me down!

Shades of blue pair so easily together, most people don’t realize that blue is practically a neutral itself! All these pieces are current (or in the jacket’s case, long term) infatuations, so wearing them all together of course just makes me happy. When you are wearing something that makes you feel happy and confident it shows – pairing my trusty leather jacket with trendy mint pants and these killer metallic heels spiked my confidence through the roof. (Okay it didn’t really until I wore this to pick up groceries after work and turned heads in every isle I walked down. I’m certain its the shoes, I caught more than a few people staring at them.) I know Safeway isn’t exactly a catwalk, but the point is that dressing well will lead to feelings of confidence! I’m not the first woman to think so either!

layering ideas COBALT & COGNAC

winter layers, leather, fur and knits

Winter in Calgary means lots and lots and LOTS of layers, but you don`t have to look like a bag lady!  My current favourite layering piece is the knit vest trimmed with faux-fur and lace.. it hits the fur trend without being over the top and adds much needed warmth on a chilly day. Layer a vest over a leather jacket to stay warm, or over a cardigan when the sun decides to make an appearance. To make a layered look successful emphasize the natural waist, mix colors, textures and prints but keep a tonal color scheme in mind. I chose my outfit around 2 key pieces, the cobalt blouse and the leather braided belt, sticking with shades of brown and blue (much like the Alberta landscape) for a perfectly put together look. To add to the slightly boho feel I wore a single feather earring instead of my usual conch jewelry, and a vintage wooden bangle, along with the on-trend studded leather cuff.

My beautiful cousin and fellow blogger sent me the top for Christmas (along with some other goodies) and I’ve been wanting to wear it ever since. The bright cobalt blue is my absolute favourite color, she’s the sweetest.. be sure to check out her blog, but download google chrome first so you can translate the Danish! I bought the multi-color braided leather belt the other day and knew that I had to pair the two together, everything else is old season, check out the le chateau outlet for tons of chic steals.

Sweater Weather

SWEATER WEATHER by the neighbourhood

is the soundtrack to my life lately, I can’t stop listening to it! Check out the inspiration for this post here. Maybe because it is most certainly sweater weather here in Calgary, maybe just because its an awesome track, either way it makes me happy.

winter fashion, boots, vest, sweater dress

This sweater is one of my favourites to dress up and down, yesterday I was fancy, today I went more casual layering a green tank dress underneath (here) grey boots (here) with a leather jacket (here) and a fur trimmed vest layered over top. I bought the vest from le chateau last year when fur vests were all the rage, I like a little fur, but its a difficult trend to embrace without looking 20lbs heavier or like a gangsta rap maven, so rather than go for a fully fur vest I compromised with this cable knit vest trimmed with fur and lace, its one of my favourite layering pieces! You will be twice as warm and twice as cute with a vest over a jacket!

keep warm this weekend!

Fall Essentials- everything under $30

This weekend I went into Calgary in search of a birthday gift for my brothers, but I had an ulterior motive… to pick up my fall must have pieces! If you follow on instagram you’ve already seen the pieces I bought!

Here I’m wearing only one new piece- the khaki green skinnies (which I got at Bluenotes, buy one get one for $10) I’ve wanted colored jeans since spring, but getting broken in the middle of summer put a real damper on my shopping! At first I was leaning towards mint (this springs hottest hue!) but I felt like the second I slipped them on the size of my thighs doubled. (Obviously not true, but a great deal of good style is being confident in your clothes, which you can’t do if you’re worried someone can see your thighs from space!) After trying on pair after pair of minty jeans I realized the color was just too light for me and my athletic legs!  So khaki it was- which is a better fall color anyways! Next on my list are colored cords, maybe in teal (my favourite color) or burgundy (the perfect tone for fall) what color are you dying to wear this fall? Let me know in the comments!

* BOOTS- winners * PU JACKET- suzy shier * SUNGLASSES – source for sports *
Everything I’m wearing cost less than $30 / piece – proof that looking good doesn’t have to cost a fortune!
PU SKIRT, PANTS – XXI FOREVER // DENIM- BLUENOTES This is the rest of what I bought while I was at Chinook Center! When I’m shopping I try to go in search of a few specific pieces at a time, going in with an idea of what I want to add to my wardrobe helps make it easier to stay focused and not overspend!

I’ve been dying to add some leather (pleather) pieces to my collection, especially this bubble skirt, which I literally HUNTED down in the zillions of racks at forever21 after seeing it a few weeks ago. Much cheaper than the Alice + Olivia version I’ve been drooling over for the longest time! When shopping for pleather look for pieces that aren’t too shiny, otherwise it often looks cheap and tacky.

I also couldn’t resist these cute little knot rings from STONERIDGE. Amber Leaf ring from Mañana Imports in Kensington. Its my uncle’s store! If you’re in the area check it out, they have lot of beautiful pieces from all over the world!

xo, a

touch of teal.

Today I had to pay a speeding ticket. One of those delightful ones where you don’t even know you got one until it arrives in the mail like a gift from the collection fairy. But I figured I might as well look good doing it.. and since I must admit- speeding is a somewhat regular habit of mine so a little extra cleavage can go a long way in saving $$$ when you get pulled over. I ❤ nice cops!

Anyways, even though I’m looking forward to spring, today I decided to cling a little bit to fall, especially since I recently received these leather motorcycle boots that I ordered from VS! I confess- I’m smitten. They’re the perfect mix between country and rock, and the cognac is an awesome color for any season. To set them off, I paired them with a leather jacket and kept the pallet neutral and with accessories accents in teal & & natural inspired prints and textures on the scarf and bag. ❤

Makeup I kept simple. With a strong brow, blush and bronzer  on cheeks and eyes + vaseline on my lips. I wanted to look light and fresh for this rainy spring day.
