shoes

Maybe it’s just me, but every summer I seem to be exceptionally hard on shoes.   Trekking over all sorts of terrain, from Stampede, to hiking, to shopping, to the farm, I am always in need of a versatile pair of flats… and I can never resist stopping at Ardene’s for the 2 for $15 deal.  Sure, they are poor quality, but I’ve observed over the years that the lifetime of my shoes doesn’t much depend on their price point, I’m just really hard on them.  Some call me the “Destroyer of Soles!”  (Although they might have meant “souls” & this is how I choose to interpret it!)

STUDDED LOAFERS

I’ve been living in these shoes this summer.  Don’t get me wrong, heels are my first and true love, but a good pair of walking shoes is absolutely crucial.  To make them even more comfortable switch out the  inner-sole for a padded insert, like these gel insoles.  A pair of shoes that you can easily slip on and run around all day in are essential for work when all you want to do is go outside and play!  With the rainy weather we’ve had here in Calgary lately these have been even more crucial than usual, as I forgo flip-flops for a little more foot protection.

I’m not kidding when I say I’m often just running around in a giant rush.. so shoelaces? Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!  Literally every single pair of shoes I own that is supposed to be laced and tied, I have knotted, cut and turned into slip-on’s.  I highly recommend it, it’s simple and saves precious seconds better used for sleeping than shoe-lace-tying!  How-To is below!
no more shoelaces

  1. Lace your shoes to fit comfortably, then double knot each lace as close to the eyelet as possible.
  2. Pull the string tight and carefully use a lighter to burn off the excess shoe-lace.
  3. Use a popsicle stick (or your finger if you like to live dangerously like I do) to tap the melted lace down on the knot to seal it!

Viola!  Now slip into your newly simplified shoes and hit the ground running!

Which pair is your favourite?  I lean towards the black studded ones (shocking).

Rain, Rain.. go away..

Okay, so summer can really show up any time now. I’m tired of the constant drizzles and threat of rain… this is Calgary, not the precipitation capital of the world thank you very much, and this. needs. to stop… I need my 2 months of summer please, and July is half over.. August better be boiling!! For real. Or I’m moving.

Comfy-casual today (and a little grumpy and tired this morning, maybe) in a basic uniform: camo skinnies, soft sweater (with cute little stud details to add a bit of interest – all the ladies at my office liked them!), basic tank and (p)leather studded loafers. A little edgy detail to add to the perfect basic combination. And the best part? This outfit cost me under $50.

Floral is always perfect for summer, and this micro-print is very country/western without being over the top.  When I get dressed for Stampede its always more western inspired than flat-out “stampede”  I mean, everyone knows a plaid shirt, denim cut-offs and cowboy boots are a prerequisite, I try to put personal style into it while mixing in practicality. This crop top is light enough that the heat is slightly more bearable and shows just enough skin without being hoochie.  Honestly, I’m pretty sure the grounds are a teenage boy’s  idea of heaven with the number of girls showing off their “assets”

Anyways, onto more important things, I died over THIS Alice and Olivia leather skater skirt (and the price tag to go with it) so when I spotted this one at F21 and they didn’t have my size, I literally hunted it down in another store and found the last one!  So worth it.  Friday night, true to Stampede style, kicked off with massive rainstorms and flash-flooding in some parts of the city (leave us alone, weather gods!) this skirt will not soak up water (thanks, pleather!) so if I get caught in the rain at least I’ll dry off quickly!  I paired it with braided gold sandals because I plan to be doing a ton of walking and the asphalt gets so hot down there that I honestly consider cowboy boots to be completely unwearable.  ONE year my friends convinced me to bust out my boots (usually reserved for actual riding..) and get into the spirit on the grounds.  (They’re actually all dead now, I murdered them after I went crazy with hot. blistered feet.) Happy feet make for happy Stampeding, and I really don’t feel the need to prove my western merit by mashing my feet into a boiled pulp. So, sandals.

Its really weird trying to dress for 35 degree weather with a 99% chance of thundershowers.  Its usually so hot that the flash of rain is almost welcome, but not actually, cause I think it’s safe to say that Calgary has had enough rain for a while!

I am all about minimalism when I go out, I don’t wanna have to worry about carrying a bunch of stuff.. this cross-body bag adds the perfect pop of color and it keeps your hands free to play games and pet animals and drink beer.  This Matt and Nat beauty was the first thing I ever ordered from Karmaloop, which started my addiction, so it has a bit of a soft-spot in my heart. For one thing, its 100% recycled, and it has 3 zip compartments; one for your money and cards, one for makeup or what have you, and a little front pocket perfectly iPhone sized- which I am still using to take all my photos (boo, quality) while nit-picking over camera shopping.

Anyways, off to the grounds! I hope you all have a beautiful Saturday!

The weather here has been ridiculous lately (haven’t you heard?)  with the storm system swirling around one minute it’s sunny and beautiful and the next it’s pouring rain.  If you stare at the clouds it’s almost dizzying how quickly they are moving around, I personally hope they are moving away but apparently we are stuck with a few more days of rain!  Rather than rain boots I paired these knee-high boots with snakeskin leather leggings and my favourite slouchy, stripy, sweater.  I love leather any time, but for rainy days it’s quite water and wind resistant, perfect for protection from the elements.  Speaking of, this utility cargo jacket is amazing, when I first got it (I ordered from Miss KL) I was a little worried because it was so big and boxy (it’s a men’s small) but after rolling up the sleeves and tightening the drawstrings at the waist I am now completely obsessed.  It’s perfect to wear over an over-sized sweater without the sleeves getting bunched-up underneath like they do in most other jackets.  My hair is pretty hopeless in the rain- a messy top knot solves that problem and the glasses solve two problems (correcting my vision, and hiding the giant bags under my eyes). This is the ultimate lazy-day comfort look for me, whenever I’m seeking out comfort I inevitably end up in menswear, I highly recommend you give it a try if you are currently a slave to a single-gender shopping experience!

Calgary floods

Its been difficult to get new photos lately due to the fact its been raining for weeks (I’ve been super busy too) I missed most of it while gallivanting in beautiful Denmark, but this last week has been rather damp. I don’t mind, I love the water, love the rain, but it can stop anytime now. If you haven’t heard Calgary is underwater- at least the neighborhoods close to either of the two rivers that run though the city. Normally I complain about how much I miss living in Mission, by the Elbow River, but I’m glad I live on a hill now! I went for a run tonight despite the rain (there’s a trail that overlooks the river) and saw the flooding for myself. Bowness and Montgomery, the area behind me in both shots, are flooded. The water has risen at least 10 feet I would say, its nearly touching the bottom of this bridge I’m standing on, the homes behind me are flooded, and the water is still rising. There is widespread flooding and residents are being evacuated in Calgary, Canmore and High River. I feel terrible for the thousands of people who are out of their homes, and the millions of dollar in damage. At this point though, I kinda wish the law firm I worked for was downtown so I could have the time off work! (I’m kidding, because it would actually be a giant pain and I like my job!)

Keep Calgary in your thoughts and let me know which outfit you prefer, click to to see the full posts, and leave your vote below for your favourite!\

It’s taken me a little time to get back into the swing of things here in reality, so I’m borrowing from the boys for a simple casual-Friday look. These sunnies are my little brothers, I literally steal his stuff all the time… good thing he loves me.  When I’m shopping for certain items I always check the men’s section first, this includes basic belts, cardigans and t-shirts.  The men’s (or boys) section is a gold-mine of versatile basics!  Its been raining on and off like crazy lately so I paired a dip-dyed plaid shirt with this mcqueen skull scarf I found on one of my many thrift-store excursions-I’ve been rockin’ skulls all over the place and I didn’t even realize it! These boyfriend jeans remain on heavy rotation, and get dressed up with these patent and suede wedges to make the legs look super long!

Lately I am having a real moment with monochrome, particularly in shades of blue and green like I mentioned HERE. I didn’t even think about it when I threw this together, I wasn’t planning on blogging it, I was just going for a walk in the forest and listening to The Hurry and The Harm for the first time.  Then I realized I was listening to Dallas Green, wearing all green and walking though the greenest forest I’ve ever seen and figured it had to be documented… PLUS it was World Environment Day-go green!!!  Though the title suggests otherwise, I actually have no desire to marry Dallas (in fact it was more to brag about my love for clue and the fact that once I beat it on the first guess!) but I do love his music beyond all words.  I’ve listened to the album 4 times since I got it yesterday.. like I said here when I love something, I REALLY LOVE IT. (Like, obsessively!)

Its the same thing with my converse, which I just noticed have holes worn though the soles from my abuse.. and these mint pleather shorts, which I have been wearing constantly (literally) since we arrived here in Denmark. (My grandmother thinks they’re awesome, she compliments me every day..) I would have packed more shorts and fewer pairs of pants had I known how beautiful the weather would be, but I wasn’t sure how much rain would be falling since last time I visited it was very damp. The three pairs I brought with me are on constant rotation.. vacation style is always simple because how much can you fit into one suitcase, really?  I’m going shopping today (our last day here) and its going to be tight tetris-ing all my stuff back into the suitcase to go home! I’m really going to miss it here, but don’t worry.. I have literally a thousand photos to look back on! I’ll share some more soon.

Wanna know a not-so-secret-secret?  High waist anything is my jam – but especially shorts!  These ones are the best ones ever because they are a soft silk and have the cutest laser cut floral detail on the bottom.  Laser-cutting is one of my favourite spring trends, on these shorts it looks kind of like lace and kind of like a scalloped hem, and that’s kind of perfect.  I am such a girly-girl at heart, give me ruffles and florals and silk and high heels and I will be happy as a clam. A little bit of edgy detail (like the zipper back of this blouse) add’s just enough sass to an otherwise sweet outfit.  I love how when paired together the shorts with this breezy graphic blouse looks like a romper!  (Another summer trend I love.) I bought this top ages ago and just noticed today it’s getting rather worn out.. Its from one of my favourite local boutiques back in Calgary, click the link above or stop by if you are shopping on 17th! They always have amazing selection (and great designer denim) and the staff are super sweet.  I’ll be heading back there when I return to #yyc to see if I can find another equally awesome top.

Speaking of perfect things that I love, summer here in Denmark is spectacularly beautiful, mostly because there are flowers and trees absolutely everywhere you turn!  I must stop blogging (I’m such night owl) and get my beauty sleep for another full day tomorrow!

Yes, animal print again…  if you’re over it, too bad for you- it’s my forever love!  This T. Babaton blouse is one of my all time favourites, the fabric is just so beautiful, I love the light color and the drape of the silk.  I got my love of silk from my mum (she’s such a snob about it – polyester is her nemesis) but it really is the best fabric out there,  I’ve said it before, all the best things are made by nature, not man.  Silk is the strongest natural fiber, its hypoallergenic, and it’s also breathable and temperature regulating – meaning it will keep you cool in the heat and warm in the cold! In other words, its bomb-diggity and totally worth the cost, if you aren’t convinced click here.

I found these shorts on a recent excursion to my favourite consignment store, Trends,  in Kensington – it was a great day for thrifting because I found these ones and this gold sequined pair.  I absolutely love a good thrift store find, and these are no exception, combining two of my favourite things – leather and mint.  I paired them with these metallic Guess heels which I am still wearing constantly.  I’ve mentioned before that I  find Guess heels are always the most comfortable.

snakeskin leggings and ankle strap pumps

You all know by now how much I love animal print, I pretty much wear it the first chance I get… that said I was jumping for joy over this entire outfit!  First up, the tee- I mean seriously how dope is this tiger graphic?   I’m loving the face, rather than just the print, it reminds me of the Givinchy dog tee.  Patent snakeskin leggings and platform pumps give it some extra kick –  I was a little hesitant to pair the snakeskin shoes and leggings together, but I just loved it too much to resist.  I wore this for a debauchery-filled girls night out on 17th avenue, an over-size envelope clutch and simple silver accessories finish this edgy look.   The panther bangle is a treasure brought back from punta cana, it broke when I got home (he swore it was real silver!) but fortunately for me, I have the worlds best grandfather, and he fixed it for me.

We are still having a lovely time together in Denmark.  Today, after 5 years since last seeing her, I am finally reunited with the beautiful Andrea!  We went for a walk along the beach tonight and talked as though no time has passed at all –  I wish we could see each other more often, but I love that we can keep up with each other through blogging!  Being here reminds me again and again how important family is, and how lucky I am to have such an amazing family around me.  Last night at dinner my great-uncle sang a tribute to his lost wife (my grandfather’s sister) and to the family he married into.  It moved me to tears as I felt so grateful to know that I am surrounded by the kind of love that spans generations.  That is what family is meant to be, and that is what we are.

flower power

floral skirt, bright bag for summer

||  skirt by TOPSHOP  ||  heels and blouse by LeCHATEAU ||  bag – thrifted  ||  aviators by ARDENES  ||

Apparently April showers bring May flowers… well all we got here in April was snow, not rain, and so May is feeling distinctly flowerless (although now its nearly over things are finally blooming) I threw on this jersey floral skirt to add a little floral to my life, in shades of blue and green of course, because I’ve been living in those tones lately.

I’ll tell you a secret, this skirt is really a tube top with an elastic bust – its such a perfect summer piece, as a top or as a bottom.  When it comes to clothes, as far as I’m concerned, there’s no rules for how to wear them.   A lightly draped “skirt” paired with a silk blouse and belted at the waist is a summer uniform for me.  Today, we finally have the rain we’ve been waiting for, so hopefully we’ll see some more flowers blooming soon!

Happy Humpday!

black//white

Black and white outfit with red heels

|| blazer, belt (similar), heels, clutch by LeCHATEAU  || leather shorts by JESSICA SIMPSON  ||

I mentioned before that I bought this blazer right before I lost a bunch of weight, then it was too big for me to wear and I was sad!  Never one to give up a great piece over something simple like size, I decided to cinch the waist in with this kimono inspired leather belt.  Okay, its actually pleather… but guess how much it cost me? 50 cents – YEAH BUDDY.

Bold stripes and shoulders on this blazer tend to make a girl look boxy, especially when wearing a couple sizes too large – an obi belt cinches the waist and breaks up the stripes, giving the illusion of a tiny midsection.  I love the natural texture of the (faux) leather paired with the bold graphic stripes – leather shorts and an over-sized patent envelope clutch play it up even more. Black and white continues to be one of my favourite trends for spring, maybe its my inner Canadian but I love punching up this trend with a pop of red – these suede platform pumps are perfect.  My little brother gave me these shades after I complained and complained about how the nose piece of my aviators gets tangled in my hair, causing some serious white girl problems. He’s the best, I always steal his sunnies and he always lets me – I’ve never worn white sunglasses before but I like these ones, maybe because the arms are black, or maybe because they were free!

I mentioned before that I love jewelry with a story- I brought this panther bangle back from Punta Cana, then it broke!  Fortunately for me I have the most amazing grandfather- the man can fix anything, and he fixed my bangle for me with a little welding or soldering or something.  Every time I look at it I think of a beautiful trip and my sweet grandfather.  My Celtic knot ring is from Scotland, the turtle ring is from my uncle’s store in Kensington, the gold branch ring is from another local boutique, Purr.  I tend to fidget, so this way each twist of my ring takes me back to a memory with my family somewhere special.  Speaking of somewhere special, I leave for Denmark in just a few days- I am so excited you guys!  So much to do in the next couple days to prepare!

summer essentials - la mer watch, aviators, lace, leopard and boyfriend jeans

|| boyfriend jeans by mavi  || leopard heels, fur trim vest, cardigan, green lace top by le chateau  ||  beach stone wrap watch by la mer ||  cross body bag by co-lab  ||  white lace top, floral bustier by sirens ||

If there is one thing I believe in with my whole heart, its that nature has already provided everything we could ever need.  For this outfit I put together all different natural elements – fur, leather, stones, floral, pony hair and leopard print.  In general, I figure if it happens naturally, you can’t really go too far wrong! What do you think?

I’m still really loving these boyfriend jeans. Part of me wants to DIY destroy them but I can’t bring myself to do it because the wash is so nice and they’re such great quality- I think I’ll let them wear out naturally a bit. These are a more polished take on boyfriend denim than a destroyed pair so I can get away with wearing them to the office – I love how cuffed denim perfectly showcases a great pair of shoes, and these are my go-to heels for day or night.

Speaking of go-to, lately I have been layering this vest over everything!  I just love how it pairs with almost anything, the pretty lace and fur trim take the olive green knit up a notch.  The weather in Calgary is so temperamental – easy layering pieces are absolutely essential – a thin cardigan and a vest are just enough to add enough warmth to the cold mornings.  Underneath I wore a floral bustier – another total spring/summer essential, and layered two different lace tops over it- an olive green one under white.  I love the how delicate the lace looks over the floral.

I’m still really stoked about winning this La Mer watch for earth day- as a big fan of the earth (and the brand) I built this outfit around this watch. Usually when I get dressed I pick a single piece to base my outfit around, I love the soft sage leather with the stones and gold – its just so naturally pretty.

“The most beautiful makeup for a woman is passion. But cosmetics are easier to buy.”
–  Yves Saint Laurent

I really believe in embracing your natural beauty – if you see photo’s on the blog where I am wearing sunglasses it usually means I am wearing zero makeup.  I don’t usually wear much makeup, especially not to work when I have to be staring at a computer screen all day.  I really wish more girls were comfortable with going out without makeup- the most unfortunate lie we let ourselves believe as girls, is that we need makeup to make us attractive.

Accept yourself- it’s the most beautiful thing you can ever do. Find your passions, follow your heart and fight for your convictions.  Do not live your life according to the standards of anyone but yourself, and do not let hardships break you. And always remember, a smile is the most beautiful makeup a girl can wear.

Today I’m super excited to show you the two latest objects of my desire that have been delivered to my door-step! This amazing military jacket and gorgeous La Mer charm wrap watch.  I ordered this jacket from Miss KL, it being on sale was the reason I could justify buying this top to get free shipping… I wasn’t sure about it when I pulled it out of the box- its a mens jacket so its pretty huge, but a few adjustments (cuffs rolled up, waist cinched in) and I am smitten.

If this last year has taught me anything, its that something good will always come to make up for the bad, as long as you keep pushing forward.  In life there will always be the potential for failure and loss, but you will certainly go no where if you never bother to try.

I’d say given the fact I run a blog, its obvious I believe in putting yourself out there! A huge part of blogging is trolling social media and brand platforms obsessively for inspiration.  I’ve mentioned many times before how much I wanted one of these La Mer wrap watches and even went so far as to DIY my own last summer. So when I saw this Earth Day-Giveaway on instagram, of course I clicked that little like button. Imagine my surprise, and excitement when I woke up the next morning with the notification that I had won! Follow them on instagram here. Its one of those things where if you want something bad enough – some how, some way – you’ll get it eventually! I was super impressed with them. I entered on Earth Day (April 22) the next morning they had notified me I had won, I emailed and within minutes they had e-mailed me a ship confirmation, one week later (to the day) this gorgeous watch had arrived on my doorstep, with a sweet card wishing me a Happy Earth Day.  You guys might have noticed that I am a big fan of the earth, check out the latest on my surface-rights blog here.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the gorgeous watch La Mer, keep up the amazing work! Live your life inspired by adventure!
