This little white jumper probably is my favourite summer layering piece.  The eyelet knit, short sleeves and cream color make it perfect for the season.  I love layering it over almost anything.

Another summer piece I’m obsessed with this year are these mint faux- leather shorts from TopShop, the fresh color makes these shorts the perfect summer leather piece.  Paired with a sweet floral ruffle blouse, and embellished sandals, this outfit is simple and girly for a summer day.

Stormy skies again here in Calgary, but at least it give’s me the perfect excuse to wear pants instead of shorts.. most girls are out Stampeding in what I can only assume is their best impression of Daisy Duke to catch a predator… it happens every year. Personally,   I prefer a little bit of western influence in my outfit, not to look like a “character”…

This outfit has a few subtle nods towards western style, I get annoyed when I go out and people ask where my boots are.. I tell them they’re back home in the barn and ask if they’re ever ridden a horse.  It gets a bit grating by day 9 to have drunk city boys attempting to flirt by pointing out you aren’t wearing cowboy boots like the other 99% of people there.  Yeah dude, its an attempt to send the message that I do not wish to take part in any line-dancing with you.. this Shania does not want your nasty boots under her bed, so peace out, please, and thank you. I mean really, go pick one of the girls wearing only lingerie please.

I know, a bit hypocritical of me considering my top choice, but it is night, and it is hot(ish) and a little lace and a little sparkle go a long way.  A white lace top is an essential for me (and every cowgirl loves a little lace).  I recently read THIS POST by fellow yycblogger Suzanne, about wearing proper lingerie; I could not agree more. One of my biggest pet peeves is a regular bra with a racer back tank; there is no excuse as SO many bras have removable straps on the back side to allow you to cross the straps, or just buy a racer-back bra.  Pulling off a sheer lace top, I prefer to wear a pretty strapless bra; it gives more support than a bandeau,  and there are no straps digging in like a regular bra.  I love this Victoria’s Secret option – it adds a little sparkle and a little more lace without being too hoochie. An absolute essential item in my books is a good strapless bra, this one is the “Dream Angel’s Multi-Way” (ooh fancy), which I just bought and definitely recommend-  link above.   If you aren’t one for sheer just layer a (racer-back) tank-top underneath.

I think I’m mostly just annoyed that people are  pointing out that I’m not wearing boots, instead of pointing out how fabulous these shoes are!  I have been on the hunt for a pair of pretty sandals and these just fell into my lap, they are my favourite color combination of blue/green ever, and ironically enough I found them right after posting that HERE! They would have looked perfect with that outfit too, but I kinda think they will look perfect with anything!

kisses and thanks for reading xo, aiyanajane

Lately I am having a real moment with monochrome, particularly in shades of blue and green like I mentioned HERE. I didn’t even think about it when I threw this together, I wasn’t planning on blogging it, I was just going for a walk in the forest and listening to The Hurry and The Harm for the first time.  Then I realized I was listening to Dallas Green, wearing all green and walking though the greenest forest I’ve ever seen and figured it had to be documented… PLUS it was World Environment Day-go green!!!  Though the title suggests otherwise, I actually have no desire to marry Dallas (in fact it was more to brag about my love for clue and the fact that once I beat it on the first guess!) but I do love his music beyond all words.  I’ve listened to the album 4 times since I got it yesterday.. like I said here when I love something, I REALLY LOVE IT. (Like, obsessively!)

Its the same thing with my converse, which I just noticed have holes worn though the soles from my abuse.. and these mint pleather shorts, which I have been wearing constantly (literally) since we arrived here in Denmark. (My grandmother thinks they’re awesome, she compliments me every day..) I would have packed more shorts and fewer pairs of pants had I known how beautiful the weather would be, but I wasn’t sure how much rain would be falling since last time I visited it was very damp. The three pairs I brought with me are on constant rotation.. vacation style is always simple because how much can you fit into one suitcase, really?  I’m going shopping today (our last day here) and its going to be tight tetris-ing all my stuff back into the suitcase to go home! I’m really going to miss it here, but don’t worry.. I have literally a thousand photos to look back on! I’ll share some more soon.

Yes, animal print again…  if you’re over it, too bad for you- it’s my forever love!  This T. Babaton blouse is one of my all time favourites, the fabric is just so beautiful, I love the light color and the drape of the silk.  I got my love of silk from my mum (she’s such a snob about it – polyester is her nemesis) but it really is the best fabric out there,  I’ve said it before, all the best things are made by nature, not man.  Silk is the strongest natural fiber, its hypoallergenic, and it’s also breathable and temperature regulating – meaning it will keep you cool in the heat and warm in the cold! In other words, its bomb-diggity and totally worth the cost, if you aren’t convinced click here.

I found these shorts on a recent excursion to my favourite consignment store, Trends,  in Kensington – it was a great day for thrifting because I found these ones and this gold sequined pair.  I absolutely love a good thrift store find, and these are no exception, combining two of my favourite things – leather and mint.  I paired them with these metallic Guess heels which I am still wearing constantly.  I’ve mentioned before that I  find Guess heels are always the most comfortable.

mint & gold

mint blazer, gold sequin shorts, nude heels

blazer, blouse, heels by LeCHATEAU  ||  shorts – thrifted, similar here  ||  iPhone clutch, LA rings, skull ring, heart bangle, braided headband by ALDO

I have to make a confession, my infatuation with gold is relatively new… for years I was a strict silver jewelry girl, I also boycotted the color brown during this phase.  I decided for some reason that they were boring colors and should be reserved for old people.  Ahh, to be 15 again.  Thankfully I’m over it and now I am obsessed with gold jewelry, to the point where I am thinking about changing my medusa piercing to a gold gem, what do you think? I love how gold looks on tan skin, maybe in time for summer!

Last week we had a few days where it was like.. 18 whole degrees.. so I borrowed my BFFs blazer and busted out my new sequin shorts for a cute spring look. I love the color mint, but I always feel like it looks much better on blondes, generally I prefer bolder tones for myself.  That’s why its such a bonus to have a friend who’s clothes you can borrow!

To satisfy my gold-fever I just bought this gorgeous feather necklace from Silla, a local boutique in Kensington (they have a shop in Lethbridge as well) they have mostly jewelry and some cute hippie style clothing, its worth checking out for the beautiful displays alone! My brass branch ring is from a store down the street, Purr, and my turtle knuckle ring is from Manana Imports, which is a couple stores over.  Generally if I go shopping in Calgary I like to hit either Kensington or 17th Avenue, absolutely if you come visit those are the areas to see- cool shops, bars, restaurants and lots of interesting people.

The main reason that I love Kensington (and 17th) is all the consignment and vintage shops.  When I walked into Trends and laid eyes on these gold sequin shorts I actually squee’d with joy.  It was kinda embarrassing… then that doubled when I found a pair of mint leather shorts and double squee’d.  The thing is, I love shorts, and I love sparkles, and leather… so really I just couldn’t help but express my joy through a shrill squeal. Hope you ladies are even a fraction as excited to see this outfit as I was to wear it! Thanks for reading gorgeous girls!

Spring is finally here in Calgary! (No matter how it tries to get away- get out of here April snow we know you can’t hold on much longer!)  Cedric and I stepped out to enjoy the weather today, he had the best time running around the yard, did you notice him?!  I’m wearing few of my favourite trends for spring- a neutral relaxed top is my key wardrobe piece, I love the sheer back on this one, the light fabric and the cuffed sleeves- it just drapes perfectly for an easy, breezy cool look! Speaking of cool, I am determined to pave the way towards shorts, even though the weather really doesn’t merit it.

Mint and gold are two colors I have been obsessed with for ages- I made this DIY Glitter Clutch around this time last year and am still loving it!  Another spring trend I DIY’d? Neon + Nude ColorBlock Cap Toe Heels– super easy to make and a super cute spring trend to try! Both DIY’s are cheap, fast and easy- just how I like em!

I accessorized my outfit based around my spring inspiration DIY’s. I got this turquoise claw necklace while visiting one of my best girlfriends in Vancouver a few summers ago- she took me to this amazing little vintage shop and I have been dreaming of returning ever since! Whenever I wear it I remember summer fun with a beautiful friend! Subtle stacked gold bangles and mixed metal rings paired with colorful feather earrings add to the easy summer vibe. I’m dreaming of Coachella from Calgary I suppose!

DIY CLUTCH

Here is the story of my life as a consumer:

Buy something, become obsessed with it for a few weeks, buy something new, immediately forget the old.

That doesn’t really work when I have no job so I’ve been forced to get creative. Now when it comes to purses and wallets- since its something I use every day, I seem to tire of them extra quickly. Occasionally I delve into the box of forgotten purses to take a trip down memory lane and see if there is anything I could be wearing right now. I came up with this gem.. I bought it a few years ago and used it as a wallet (everyone thought that was weird..) because at the time I was taking public transit to my job where I made 7.80 an hour (super fun times). Anyways, I was always carrying a huge bag of stuff with me; work lunches, water bottle, change of shoes, book etc. It got annoying trying to find a small wallet in there, and having to switch my stuff out of my work bag if I wanted to go out so I started carrying this clutch with everything I needed, so that I could just take it out and go. And it worked awesome, so eff the haterz/

~ MINT + GOLD GLITTER COLOR BLOCK CLUTCH ~

here it is in all its glory BEFORE

THE FINAL PRODUCT & HOW I MADE IT:

  1. So step one, find or buy a clutch. ( If you found it, clean it off. Mine is just vinyl so I used a damp towel to wipe it down.)
  2. Using a paintbrush, apply ModPodge generously around the outside edge. (Since my clutch had separate pieces I didn’t bother taping, but if the one you have is all once piece, tape it off before you start to get nice clean lines)
  3. Sprinkle loose glitter over the ModPodge, this is much easier if the glitter comes with a shaker head. Try to cover as much of the glue as possible, use lots of glitter. Once its covered either lightly blow the excess off or gently tap it against the ground (with paper underneath) to catch the glitter. It should go without saying not to touch any of the glitter-glue with your hands or on the ground.
  4. Next I used Martha Stewart “glitter” craft paint in “wintermint” on the main area of the flap. It took me about 20 coats (with many days of drying time between-I AM NOT KIDDING) to get it to be thick enough to look fully glittered. I’ve been obsessed with mint and gold lately so those are the colors I decided to go for. I was experimenting a bit with methods here-  the gold I used modpodge + loose sparkles, the mint- glitter paint. Never again with the glitter paint that’s all I’m gonna say. Its fine if you want a sheer coat of sparkle, if you want it to be covered, its a googleplex times easier to just use loose glitter and modpodge. Leave about an hour drying time for paint between coats, and at least 2 hours for the ModPodge.
  5. Once its dry, tap it against something to remove any loose glitter, then if there is anywhere that needs touched up, use a paintbrush to apply modpodge to the spots that need fixing, and then sprinkle glitter over it (I used the extra glitter that had fallen off of mine.) leave touch-ups to dry for about an hour.
  6. Seal it with one more full coverage coat of ModPodge over the entire glittered surface, leave to dry over night and viola.

HALF WAY THROUGH THE MAKEOVER…

above: the materials i used- purse with paint drying after a few coats. gold sparkles still are unsealed.
