If you haven’t already noticed, I’m kinda a hippy deep down inside,  I almost named my blog “hippy at heart” but I didn’t really think it reflected my personal style very well, since I don’t usually dress very boho-chic!   Simply because living in Calgary, most of the time the temperatures do not allow it,  however, in mid-summer (and for the Stampede!) this maxi dress is perfect to throw on with oversize sunnies and bed-head banded down with a leather & feather hair tie.   I am so happy to be staying on a farm this summer, back to my country girl roots with big skies and bare feet- to go out in the city I added gold sandals but for a more Stampede look just add cowboy boots!

I have to confess myself exceptionally thrilled with this purchase for a number of reasons. First, I’ve never had a maxi dress before (not because I’m too short, in fact, a maxi will visually elongate a short frame so petite girls just go get one hemmed if they’re all too long!) but because I never found “the one” sure, there were a few flames in dressing rooms:  I nearly bought a leopard print one (shocking that I resisted leopard, I know) but the price tag compared to the quality was not enough to justify it.  For a nice maxi, avoid polyester.. it doesn’t breathe well, and it doesn’t last long.  This 100% cotton Billabong dress is perfect, especially for summer because the cotton is light and breathable.     The main reason this dress came home with me, no questions asked, is because it cost me $19.99!

Yeah.  You can’t say no to that kind of deal. I’ve actually been absolutely loving all of the Billabong and Roxy dresses lately, its been hard to resist taking them all home,  super cute and super affordable, be sure to check them out! This dress also checked off a few of my other favourite things and appealed to my girly side.

This blush tone is my favourite shade of pink, I love how it looks on tan skin with dark hair, I added a belt at the to break up the monochrome a little and define the waist.  It has a very subtle high-lo hem, with tiers of crochet and soft ruffles, the skirt moves so nicely and totally reminds me of an old country girl skirt.  Whenever I dress for Stampede I always have”cowboys and indians” in the back of my mind and tend to dress more towards the native side with simple jewelry, feather accessories, and leather ties.  I figure most people going have the cowboy side covered and largely ignore the Native American part of the history. (Not entirely, check out the parade, exhibition halls and grandstand show!)

If you are in Calgary and want to shop away from the craziness of the Stampede and downtown core,  check out West Hills shopping center in the SW.  The Signal Hill Winners gets the best product in Calgary (seriously) so you can find lots of great brands and really great pieces for way less than retail.   Surrounding are outlets for many other stores including Guess, Danier Leather, Ardene, La Senza, Le Chateau, West 49 and Shoe Company. For a full list of stores click here and here.  I got my dress at Winners, but the West 49 Outlet also carries Billabong and other great brands and its all clearance!  Its good to do a little outlet shopping after the crazy high-prices in the Stampede grounds!

Floral is always perfect for summer, and this micro-print is very country/western without being over the top.  When I get dressed for Stampede its always more western inspired than flat-out “stampede”  I mean, everyone knows a plaid shirt, denim cut-offs and cowboy boots are a prerequisite, I try to put personal style into it while mixing in practicality. This crop top is light enough that the heat is slightly more bearable and shows just enough skin without being hoochie.  Honestly, I’m pretty sure the grounds are a teenage boy’s  idea of heaven with the number of girls showing off their “assets”

Anyways, onto more important things, I died over THIS Alice and Olivia leather skater skirt (and the price tag to go with it) so when I spotted this one at F21 and they didn’t have my size, I literally hunted it down in another store and found the last one!  So worth it.  Friday night, true to Stampede style, kicked off with massive rainstorms and flash-flooding in some parts of the city (leave us alone, weather gods!) this skirt will not soak up water (thanks, pleather!) so if I get caught in the rain at least I’ll dry off quickly!  I paired it with braided gold sandals because I plan to be doing a ton of walking and the asphalt gets so hot down there that I honestly consider cowboy boots to be completely unwearable.  ONE year my friends convinced me to bust out my boots (usually reserved for actual riding..) and get into the spirit on the grounds.  (They’re actually all dead now, I murdered them after I went crazy with hot. blistered feet.) Happy feet make for happy Stampeding, and I really don’t feel the need to prove my western merit by mashing my feet into a boiled pulp. So, sandals.

Its really weird trying to dress for 35 degree weather with a 99% chance of thundershowers.  Its usually so hot that the flash of rain is almost welcome, but not actually, cause I think it’s safe to say that Calgary has had enough rain for a while!

I am all about minimalism when I go out, I don’t wanna have to worry about carrying a bunch of stuff.. this cross-body bag adds the perfect pop of color and it keeps your hands free to play games and pet animals and drink beer.  This Matt and Nat beauty was the first thing I ever ordered from Karmaloop, which started my addiction, so it has a bit of a soft-spot in my heart. For one thing, its 100% recycled, and it has 3 zip compartments; one for your money and cards, one for makeup or what have you, and a little front pocket perfectly iPhone sized- which I am still using to take all my photos (boo, quality) while nit-picking over camera shopping.

Anyways, off to the grounds! I hope you all have a beautiful Saturday!

tank + earrings  XXI FOREVER  ||  denim + heels Le CHATEAU

Wearing Red, White and Blue to kick off the holiday this lovely July 4th day!  Okay, so I’m not American, (and I didn’t even do a Canada day themed post, for shame) but I am Calgarian and July 4 marks the start of Stampede this year, which for Calgary is kinda like if the 4th of July happened ten days in a row.For the next ten days, I’ll be showing you different ways to style what I consider to be “stampede essentials” and passing along the little tid-bits of wisdom  I’ve picked up as a ranch-girl turned city-slicker and life-long rodeo aficionado.  I think it shows in these photo’s how happy I am to be back in the country for summer!  Make sure you follow along even if you can’t attend the festivities personally, a little country girl style in the summer never hurt nobody.
Stampede consists of rodeo and cowboys (real and pretend) cut-offs (and are those even shorts?) carnival food (and I dare you to try that!) and everything else you need to have a good party.  Throw in a city of a million who have been working tirelessly on flood relief and we are gonna have one hell of a time, hell or high water! You could wear this out for 4th of July festivities, regardless of your nationality or reasons for celebrating, because everyone likes to party!

summer stampede essential #1 – breezy white tank

July 4th is actually sneek-a-peek, but tonight I’m planning on catching Calgary born Michael Bernard Fitzgerald on the Coke Stage, it officially kicks off the 5th with the parade on Friday morning.  For the show and walking around the grounds I’ll switch to a pair of chucks but going out after requires a little more.. kick (bad, I know) so red heels it is!  I  have to admit, I bought these years ago, took a nasty spill in them and just now have worked up the courage to wear them again.  If I was to give you realistic advice, I would say do not wear heels to the Stampede at all.. but no girl in the world wears heels to be practical! So make your choice and know your pain tolerance. Haha!
One thing about Stampede that’s an absolute certainty – its gonna be hotter than the hottest thing you can think of down on the stampede grounds. (Please disregard that I’m melting in these shots!)  Calgary weather is so weird, June 30th, torrential rain… July 1st, its 35 degrees.  Keep that in mind and dress accordingly if you are planning on spending the day.   Bring sunscreen, water, a light long sleeve throw over, and a hat – the cowboy hat is practically obligatory.  Today I chose a breezy white cowl neck tank with crochet straps because it’s just about the coolest top I own, a peekaboo pretty lace bra from VS add’s a little ooh-lah-lah and to keep the look polished I paired tailored denim shorts with peep-toe pumps.   My dog chewed my cowboy hat and I haven’t got a new one.. I’m probably not going to either so you can just do me a favor and imagine.

Wanna know a not-so-secret-secret?  High waist anything is my jam – but especially shorts!  These ones are the best ones ever because they are a soft silk and have the cutest laser cut floral detail on the bottom.  Laser-cutting is one of my favourite spring trends, on these shorts it looks kind of like lace and kind of like a scalloped hem, and that’s kind of perfect.  I am such a girly-girl at heart, give me ruffles and florals and silk and high heels and I will be happy as a clam. A little bit of edgy detail (like the zipper back of this blouse) add’s just enough sass to an otherwise sweet outfit.  I love how when paired together the shorts with this breezy graphic blouse looks like a romper!  (Another summer trend I love.) I bought this top ages ago and just noticed today it’s getting rather worn out.. Its from one of my favourite local boutiques back in Calgary, click the link above or stop by if you are shopping on 17th! They always have amazing selection (and great designer denim) and the staff are super sweet.  I’ll be heading back there when I return to #yyc to see if I can find another equally awesome top.

Speaking of perfect things that I love, summer here in Denmark is spectacularly beautiful, mostly because there are flowers and trees absolutely everywhere you turn!  I must stop blogging (I’m such night owl) and get my beauty sleep for another full day tomorrow!

Favourite Things

|| denim by american eagle || shoes by guess || watch by la mer || bag by co-lab || leather jacket, tank, pashmina by le chateau ||

When I’m in a rush (which in the morning I often am) I tend to go back to pieces that I really, really love. My favourite color is teal blue, like when you look at the ocean and its the most magical shade – I pretty much like any color remotely close to that blue-green spectrum, which is why this pashmina is possibly my favourite scarf I own. I bought it while I was working at Le Chateau, and I NEVER bought stuff right when it came in, but this scarf was different, as I opened the stock box and unwrapped it from its plastic tomb, I just knew that scarf needed to come home with me. I never regretted it. Maybe this is why I’m okay with no kids – I treat clothing like my little rescue babies. You’ll come home with me my pretties, and I will love you, you will not be forgotten at the back of some unfashionable closet somewhere.

I have similar feelings about these pants ($11), shoes($60), bag ($40) and jacket($35). They have a few things in common, all were on sale – the shoes, bag and skinnies at Winners, the jacket I got at a Le Chateau outlet for half off the sale price. If you go to an outlet and hunt through the racks of polyurethane you will be sure to find a few genuine leather or suede pieces at really great prices! The key to great bargain shopping is patience. I prefer to go alone so no one is waiting on me or, alternatively, slowing me down!

Shades of blue pair so easily together, most people don’t realize that blue is practically a neutral itself! All these pieces are current (or in the jacket’s case, long term) infatuations, so wearing them all together of course just makes me happy. When you are wearing something that makes you feel happy and confident it shows – pairing my trusty leather jacket with trendy mint pants and these killer metallic heels spiked my confidence through the roof. (Okay it didn’t really until I wore this to pick up groceries after work and turned heads in every isle I walked down. I’m certain its the shoes, I caught more than a few people staring at them.) I know Safeway isn’t exactly a catwalk, but the point is that dressing well will lead to feelings of confidence! I’m not the first woman to think so either!

||  coral burnout tee  by element  ||  bralet by free people  ||  camo denim by g21  || aviators by ardenes  || shoes by le chateau  || bag by co-lab  || feather necklace by silla designs  ||

Camouflage jeans have been on my must-buy list for ages, I mentioned before here that I was searching for the perfect pair.  Camo is one of those prints I come back to every few years and right now I am having a major moment with it.  I was in Walmart a couple weeks ago getting my chocolate fix for cheap and spotted these… I actually couldn’t believe it.  I had tried on a current elliot pair and here these were- fitting better for exponentially cheaper ($200 CE v. $20 G21).

I also mentioned my latest love affair with coral (and over-sized tops) here – this burnout tee from element fits the bill perfectly.  The blush tone looks so lovely against tan skin, layered over a sweet lace bralet for an effortless and comfortable look.  An over-sized tee is absolutely essential for summer, just grab one a couple sizes up from your usual – the color of this one was too perfect to resist, so it didn’t matter that they only had medium left.  I love the burnout and the little pocket detail – element is one of my favourite brands for basic tee’s and hoodies.

I kept everything pretty simple here- sometimes the best outfits are the easiest!  Simple gold jewelry and nude accessories let the camo stay in the spotlight. (Even though that’s exactly the opposite of camo’s original purpose!)  I find it interesting how much of my favourite women’s fashion is based off of typically manly things- the military, the navy, the boyfriend jeans or blazer.  Boys just get all the fun!   Fortunately with this whole equality thing, now girls can jack their style and rock it better than any boy I know!

Hope you girls (and boys) have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday!

Tribal Print & Coral

The other day one of my favourite bloggers, the gorgeous Signeroo, posted about how a stranger had commented on her dress as looking like “safari wear” – this is not a bad thing!  If you check out her post you can see what I mean – she looks lovely in a safari inspired dress, just her blog click link!

Can I just say that I am having a total moment with coral?  It looks so nice on tan skin, I feel so summery in this color! It also looks AMAZING on fair skinned girls, if my roomie wasn’t so shy I’d prove it – we have the same blouse.  Apparently it was featured on city line, which I didn’t know until I looked it up to link for you girls! Here I wear a size medium because I love a truly oversized blouse. Never be afraid to try the next size up when it comes to tops! This one is a great buy! Tribal and safari style are one of the biggest (and most beautiful) influences for summer.  Printed leggings were big on my must-have list for winter, and this gorgeous coral blouse transitions them perfectly for spring/summer!

I cinched the waist (to give the oversize blouse some shape) with a multi-colored braided belt and paired it with bold wedge sandals (check the outlets for them!), a neutral cross-body and coral (like, real coral) earrings a friend brought back from Mexico for me.  I have mentioned before how I love to have jewelry with a bit of a story behind it!

Sometimes I would never consider pairing certain colors together until I find an item with both in it – like coral and purple. Still, I am majorly in love with these leggings, I was a bit nervous about wearing them to work. ( I mean, tribal leggings to a law firm? Y/N?)  Turns out, my worries were totally unfounded, cause my boss and co-workers all loved the tights and the shoes! Yay.  Can I tell you guys a bit of a secret? I always wanted to work somewhere where you could dress nicely.. I mean, saving people is good and all, but scrubs? Yuck.  (Just kidding nurses, ilu!  … not dentists though, we’re still friends off.) Thanks for reading! everyone 🙂

DIY love - studded union jack cardi, sun lightened hair

|| CO-LAB cross body bag, KERSH union jack cardigan, leggings – WINNERS||  boots – SPRING|| tank, pashmina – Le CHATEAU  ||

I’m still so thrilled with this Studded Union Jack Cardigan!  I just love an over-sized cardi, leggings and boots- living in Calgary, I wear a variation of this outfit 365 days a year almost.  Even though I am Canadian by citizenship, sometimes my heart feels somewhere else!   My mum is from Scotland and I am still harboring the somewhat-secret desire to disappear away to Europe forever.. a few more years of saving I think! Till then, the sweater.

British style is a huge source of inspiration for me, and one quintessential aspect of British style is punk. I ended up adding some stud’s to the shoulders after I posted the original Studded Cardigan DIY here.  I like it much more, it adds the perfect  amount of edge!  I have a feeling I may end up studding significantly more garments in days to come, its ridiculously easy and I urge you to give it a try!

I drive by this building almost every day, and I’ve wanted to take photos there forever! Heritage Posters and Music is such a dope store, and if you live in Calgary, or ever come visiting, its worth stopping into! Or at least hanging around out back to take photos! It seemed particularly fitting since the other day was Record Store day, did anyone go!?

I had an amazing time shooting with my friend Brandi today, who has decided to get back into her photography habit and is gonna shoot for the blog on the regular (we think).  I’m very excited.  I’m taking my latest inspiration to heart and am hoping to push myself further and farther than ever before by making the best of the every day little things, while remembering that it’s the every day things that build to success.  So thanks for reading, and for being a part of it! 🙂

casual camoflage

camo print leggings and an oversized henley

A little bit inspired by St. Patrick’s Day, but more because it finally started to feel like spring is in the air! I paired two of the greatest prints and  the biggest trends coming up for spring -floral and camouflage.camo leggings and floral bralet, billabong henley, le chateau owl necklace, leather cuff and lace vest, aldo rings and bangles Lately I’ve been embracing my inner hippie with a feather earring worn in the my conch.  I cannot wait to have the long hippie hair to go with it! Over-sized sunglasses, an adorable little owl pendant, and a knock-off Hermes studded cuff, all available at le chateau. The rest of the accessories (other than the vintage wooden bangle) “love” thumb ring, open head-to-head skull ring, and gold studded stretch bangle are all available at aldo.

conch wooden feather earring, love ring, and hermes leather cuffI love camo print, mostly because I’m a big green fan, but it also just gives that casual cool touch to an outfit. I had a dope pair of camo shorts that I donated a little while back just because I had them for so long.. then naturally, camo starts appearing everywhere! I have been searching for the perfect fitting pair of camo skinny jeans that don’t break the bank. I fell in love with this current elliott pair, but not the $198 price tag.  So the search for the perfect camo pant continues, meanwhile I couldn’t resist these $7 leggings from Sirens to embrace the trend a little without busting the college student budget!casual camoflageFloral, an annual spring trend, has been my BFF forever- I’m a girly girl at heart when it comes to clothes! The bustier is also from Sirens, retailing at a whopping $12 – it adds just a touch of print and the tiny floral print is unobtrusive enough to mix with the bold camo print.head to toe details - floral bralet and camo leggings by sirens, rings by aldo, jewelery and vest by le chateau, henly by billabongOn top I wore this Billabong Henley  its one of my favourite shirts because its honestly as comfortable as pajamas and its such a pretty, subtle shade of green. I bought it in extra-large so that I could get away with wearing it with leggings. I love buying over-sized tops, although I have to admit, I toe the line a bit when it comes to the leggings-are-not-pants rule. To add some shape to the over-sized top, and visually elongate the look, I layered a black cotton and lace vest from le chateau over top. That baby cost me a total of $5 so I keep it even though I only wear it once in a blue moon.

The ankle boots are from le chateau as well, old season.  The day after I took these my roomie brought home the most beautiful over the knee boots that would have been perfect! Thankfully we have the same sized feet so I promise you’ll be seeing them soon!Sunglasses and feather earring by le chateau

DIY- Denim cutoffs with lace

Once upon a time I bought the most wonderful pair of blue jeans, wore them so often and they served me well.  They were comfortable, just the right wash, had good stretch to them and weren’t even expensive!  It wasn’t their fault when my inner thighs rubbed a hole into them… more like my chocolate bar addictions fault. (I actually have a problem…LEGIT)  Regardless of where the fault lies, I was devastated.

Of course this seems to always happen to my favourite jeans (probably because I wear them so much that they get worn out extra quickly) but its so heartbreaking to lose a great pair to something as insulting as inner thigh chub rub. Thankfully I’m not a minority victim here.. many of my close friends have lamented the loss of a great pair of jeans to the dreaded thigh holes.. but why throw them out when you can make something even more adorable out of them!?

Of course the night after I post about how I’m too busy to post I decide that I have to make these. I’m heading to the Stampede this Saturday and wanted my daisy dukes to have a little somethin’ extra. So here’s as easy DIY for your summer stampede style- Lace cutoffs!

Its easy! Start with those evil holes and then cutstraight across to the other seam ( do this on both sides, obviously.)  Remember when in doubt, leave more and not less material, you can always trim it to look neat after, but its a big pain to try to reattach it, and it never looks the same.

Next find some lace. (Actually you should probably find the lace prior to starting your project but whatevaaa ) You can buy some from a fabric store but I just used an old tablecloth I salvaged from my friend. (I’m a scavenger, so sue me!) Cut it to be the length of the circumference of each pant leg- just measure using the cutoffs.  Turn the shorts inside-out and then pin the lace on in a circle evenly along the bottom, joining the two ends right on that dreaded inner thigh seam. Now sew it on there! With lace make sure you are careful to get it all properly on there, the holes in the fabric pattern can make it difficult to attach it firmly, so with any perceived problem areas simply back-stitch over and carry on your merry way. Make sure you sew the joining ends together quite well, a few extra back-stitches never did anyone any harm and you don’t wanna wear out your shorts next do you!?

Then I cut out pieces of the lace and added pocket detailing (just because I got carried away) I hand stitched those on with white thread.

BEFORE they were ratty skinny jeans, HERE’S THE FINAL RESULT:

So even though I salvaged those, I’ve gotten extremly tired of ruining pants with my own lack of self control.

Whats made the real difference is these POP Pilates Videos, I’ve been using this video to shrink those inner thighs down and it really works! Give it a shot to tone up your legs for summer!

Try it and prepare for thigh pain! But no pain, no gain! Pretend your having as great a time as Cassey! Fake it till you make it baby!

Head over to http://blogilates.com/ and check out all of Cassey’s videos and tips! She’s amazing! (and a wordpress user.. so now you gotta do it!)
